Cats Stifle Mavs, Run Win Streak to Eight
Sep 18, 2021 | Volleyball
OMAHA, Neb. – K-State tallied a season-high 15 blocks, stifling the Omaha offense on its way to a four-set victory Saturday on the final day of the Omaha Challenge at Baxter Arena, 25-11, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19.
Kayley Hollywood was in on 10 of K-State's 15 blocks, as the redshirt junior set a new career high and helped the Wildcats (9-2) hold the Mavericks (3-7) to a .087 hitting percentage.
Aliyah Carter logged her sixth double-double of the year with 15 kills and 13 digs and the Cats closed their non-conference schedule by notching their eighth victory in a row. Carter was voted MVP of the Omaha Challenge and was joined on the all-tournament team by Teana Adams-Kaonohi and Mackenzie Morris.
"I thought that was Kayley Hollywood's best match in terms of her play at the net," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "There are productive touches (at the net) and then there are stuffs, and she did both and did a really good job at controlling the net. One of our priorities was to be on task in defending left-side attack. I thought that was a bright spot in combination with our serving being pretty disruptive this weekend."
Hollywood is the first Wildcat this season to reach double-digit blocks and, as a team, K-State now has seven matches with 10 or more blocks. Haley Warner added six block assists while Adams-Kaonohi chipped in five. UNO's attacking percentage marked the lowest of any K-State opponent this season
"Omaha is a team where if you can limit their options, things level out a little bit," Fritz added. "But when they are in system, they can use their speed and play fast and can be really dangerous. We were able to negate that a little bit with our serving. But we kept our opponent to a really low efficiency, and at times, that was as good as we've played all year."
The Mavericks committed 31 attacking errors while putting down 44 kills. Conversely, K-State's offense produced 48 kills against 17 errors for a .225 efficiency.
Three Cats broke the 10-dig mark, led by Morris' 17. Loren Hinkle finished with 11 digs and was one of three players with a pair of service aces. Sydney Bolding and Jacque Smith each added two aces.
Hinkle has an ace in six straight matches, including five with multiple aces. As a team, the Wildcats have at least five aces in eight straight outings.
K-State's offense clicked in the first set with a .406 attacking efficiency, getting five kills from Carter and four from Warner. With three first-set blocks, Omaha managed a negative percentage (-.030) as it was forced into eight errors while recording just seven kills.
Smith's serve sparked an early seven-point scoring burst and, later in the set, her first ace put the gap at 22-9.
The second set saw the Cats turn in just nine kills at a match-low .081 percentage, but a 6-3 closing run handed K-State a two-set edge.
The Mavericks had a team hitting percentage of .000 through two sets, with a total of 17 errors against 17 kills. K-State totaled seven stuff blocks through two sets, with five from Hollywood.
Omaha managed a third-set victory behind six kills from Sadie Limback on 11 swings (.455). UNO also added four blocks to hold the Wildcats to a .114 clip. Carter manufactured four kills in the frame while Holly Bonde came off the bench to add three along with Warner's three.
K-State's offense found footing again in the fourth to the tune of a .324 efficiency, led by four kills from Carter at a .375 pace and three apiece from Bolding and Warner on five attacks (.600). Four more blocks to go with three aces also added to the Wildcat cause.
The Cats registered at least three team blocks in all four sets, including four stuffs in sets two, three and four.
Limback's team-best 15 kills came with a .353 hitting percentage (3 errors, 34 swings). No other Maverick with at least 10 attempts had higher than a .250 mark.
The Mavs' offense hit under .140 in all three sets they dropped. UNO hit .211 in the third.
Jaiden Centeno picked dup 17 digs while libero Claire Mountjoy added 16 for Omaha.
Next up the Cats is 12th-ranked Baylor, as K-State is set to open Big 12 play at home on Saturday and Sunday.
"l think we did what we needed to do in the preseason," Fritz finished. "We had opportunities to win every match we were in, would've liked to have gotten one or two more, to be honest. I think we did what we needed to do to position ourselves to be ready and prepared for Big 12 play."
"The rhythm of the season changes a little bit now. We will take a couple days off, hit the reset button and try to get ready for Baylor."
Saturday's match at Bramlage Coliseum will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ at 4 p.m. while the series finale will be broadcast on ESPNU at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Play-by-play from Rob Voelker will also be available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and at K-StateSports.com/Watch.
