Wildcats Finish 14th at the Schooner Fall Classic
Sep 27, 2021 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. – The Kansas State women's golf team couldn't rise up the leaderboard on Monday, as the Wildcats carded an 11-over par 291 final round on Monday to close out the Schooner Fall Classic.Â
Â
The round of 291 was the best 18 of the tournament for the Cats, but they finished the penultimate event of the fall schedule in 14th place at 43-over par 883.
Â
"Not a good result for us overall," head coach Kristi Knight said. "We dug a hole in the first round, or really the last few holes of the first round. In a field like this, it is difficult to recover and move up. We can't waste shots like that."
Â
For the second-straight tournament, freshman Remington Isaac led the team on the individual leaderboard. The Montgomery, Texas product carded a 1-over par 71 during round three to bring her total to 5-over par 215 to tie for 24th place.  Â
Â
Heather Fortushniak, a senior, tied for 51st place after the final round. She shot a 3-over par 73 on Monday to bring her final tally to 12-over par 222.
Â
Gabriela McNelly and Haley Vargas tied for 65th with a score of 16-over par 226. Vargas shot a 5-over par 75 in round three, while McNelly shot a 2-over par 72 to rise four spots on the leaderboard Monday afternoon. The round of 72 is tied for the best of McNelly's young career.Â
Â
Manon Donche-Gay, who has played well during the early part of her first season with the Wildcats, couldn't recover from her 11-over par 81 round two on Tuesday. She finished alone in 73rd place at 19-over par 229 after recording a 5-over par 75 in the final round.Â
Â
Ranked third in the nation by Golfweek, Oklahoma State dominated the event hosted by its in-state rival. The Cowgirls ran away with first place by 20 strokes at 16-under par 824. OSU had all five players in their scoring lineup finish in the top-15, led by Caley McGinty and Rina Tatematsu. McGinty won the event with an 8-under par 202, four shots ahead of Tatematsu in second place.
Â
Kansas State will return to action October 10-12 at the Dale McNamara Invitational, its final event of the fall slate.
Â
"We will have a couple of days to rest and recover," Knight said. "Then it's back to getting better."
