The Wildcats will open their spring competition season on Saturday
MANHATTAN, Kan. – After a stellar performance during the fall season, the Kansas State women's tennis team will start the Spring 2022 season on Saturday (January 22) at Body First Tennis Center. The Wildcats will take on the South Dakota Coyotes at 10 a.m., CT followed by the Missouri State Bears at 3 p.m., CT.
On Sunday (January 23), K-State will take a break while the Coyotes and Bears battle at 11 a.m. CT.
"We're excited to start our season with 6 matches in a row at home," said head coach Jordan Smith. "The team is coming off a productive preseason of getting plenty of reps. Saturday will be a good indicator of where the ladies are mentally. Doubleheaders are tricky but thankfully we have solid depth to compete well against South Dakota and Missouri State."
Led by Smith, who enters his fourth spring season in 2022, the Wildcats are an experienced squad with five seniors (Ioana Gheorghita, Karine-Marion Job, Maria Linares, Rosanna Maffei and Anna Turco) who have combined for 227 singles wins in their respective careers. The team also returns sophomore Manami Ukita, who posted 16 singles wins in 2020-21, as well as promising freshmen Dinara Alloyarova and Florentine Dekkers.
K-State is coming off a strong showing during the Fall 2021, in which, several Wildcats performed well.
At the Big 12 Fall Championships at Oklahoma State from November 5 to November 7, Maffei led the way for the Wildcats and defeated the No. 3 seed Malkia Ngounoue from Kansas in the first round of match play, followed by Texas Tech's Kailey Evans in the quarterfinals and Mananchaya Sawangkaew from Oklahoma State in the semifinals. Maffei took down all three opponents in two-sets.
The Atripalda, Italy native lost to Alina Shcherbinina from Baylor, 6-4, 6-3, in the finals to claim the runner-up title.
While the team was in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Job traveled to San Diego, California for the ITA National Fall Championships from November 4 through November 7. Job was the first individual in program history to represent K-State at the ITA National Fall Championships.
Job earned the bid after clinching the singles main draw runner-up title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional. The France native won the semifinals round against Maria Titova from Kansas in two-sets, 6-4, 6-4, before falling to No. 58 Thasaporn Naklo from Iowa State in the finals round.
