Multiple Top-Five Finishes Conclude Final Day of Texas Tech Open & Multis

Jan 29, 2022 | Track & Field

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Kansas State track and field team recorded five top-five finishes on Saturday (January 29) to wrap up competition at the Texas Tech Open & Multis at the Sports Performance Center.

"We had some personal-bests in the weight throw, men's triple jump, and season bests in a number of events, so there was obvious production there," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "We also had quite a few new athletes who are working though building a new technique, which is a process. Performances sometimes don't appear to be very good, but good things are to come. Sometimes we wish we could, but this process can't be rushed. This was a very large meet and sometimes we end up in heats where we are running by ourselves so again times are sometimes not indicative of performance readiness, but again part of the process is learning to run fast when you are by yourself."

Throwing to 14.10m/46-3.25 in the women's shot put section B was sophomore Jaycee Schroeder. The Dandridge, Tennessee native clinched second place while sophomore Grace Thompson came in fourth with a mark of 13.74m/45-1. In section A, sophomore Jasmine Greer closed out the event in fourth place with a throw of 15.45m/49-8.50, a new personal-best.

Recording a time of 23.93 and earning third out of 78 competitors was fifth-year senior Wurrie Njadoe. Junior Shalysa Wray came in 13th with a time of 24.30.

Tying for fifth in the men's high jump was fifth-year senior Kyle Alcine with a height of 2.14m/7-0.25. Freshman Kamyren Garrett also competed in the event, tying for 11th with a height of 2.04m/6-8.25.

Sophomore Jackson Gibbon represented K-State in the men's shot put and finished the event in eighth with a heave of 15.15m/49-8.50.

Junior Devon Richardson tied his personal-best in the men's triple jump, registering a mark of 15.38m/50-5.50 to finish in seventh place. On the women's side, freshman Velecia Williams finished eighth with a leap of 12.52m/41-1.

Running in the men's 200-meter dash were freshmen Kavian Kerr and Prithviraj Chougule. Kerr led the way in 15th with a time of 21.52 and Chougule clocked in at 23.23, finishing in 69th place.

"We are a month out from the conference championship, and we have a lot of work to do. The next two weeks in particular are important for training," said Rovelto. "What we accomplish in training will, in great part, determine our success at the conference and NCAA meets."

K-State will remain on the road and head to Lincoln, Nebraska on Friday (February 4) and Saturday (February 5) for the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Competition on Friday will kick off at 4 p.m. with the men's weight throw and women's 60-meter hurdles followed by an 11 a.m., CT start on Saturday with the women's 200-meter dash.
