BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Haley Vargas shined for the Kansas State women's golf team as she tied for third place at 1-under par 215 following Tuesday's final round of the Dale McNamara Invitational.
As a team, the Wildcats finished in ninth place at 33-over par 897, closing out their time at the par-72, 6,233-yard Cedar Ridge Country Club with a 9-over par 298 third round.
The performance from Vargas, a senior from Lubbock, Texas, was her career-low 54-hole score and highest-ever collegiate finish.
Vargas entered Tuesday's final round in fifth place of a tight 75-golfer field. It was one crucial hole after another for her down the stretch, but Vargas showed a ton of poise with 10 pars and four birdies in her third round to clinch a spot in the top-five.
It has been a great start to her senior season as Vargas continues to lead the Wildcats in stroke average at 73.55.
"I'm happy for Haley, she played very well," said head coach Kristi Knight. "I know she is disappointed she came up a couple of shots short, but she can be proud as she competes hard every round and invests in improving her game."
The other big story for K-State on Tuesday was the play of freshman Noa Van Beek.
She shot an even-par 72 third round to leap up 21 spots in the standings and tied for 32nd at 11-over par 227. The performance included 10 birdies, a positive showing for the Oene, Netherlands product in her Wildcat debut.
Finishing in a tie for 42nd place at 13-over par 229 was Manon Donche-Gay after tallying a 6-over par 78 final round.
Gabriela McNelly recorded a 4-over par 76 third round to finish in a tie for 53rd place at 15-over par 231. Napua Glossner finished a stroke behind her in a tie for 56th place at 16-over par 232 after shooting a 5-over par 77 final round.
Competing this week as an individual, Kate Tilma registered a 6-over par 78 third round and tied for 65th at 20-over par 236.
Host-school Tulsa came away with a narrow victory at 4-over par 868, while Miu Takahashi of Nebraska won the individual championship at 3-under par 213.
The Wildcats will now turn their attention to the final event of the fall slate, the Battle at the Beach, held in Cabo, Mexico on October 28-30.
