MANHATTAN, Kan. - Following his individual championship at the Wildcat Invitational and role in back-to-back team championships, Kansas State men's golfer Cooper Schultz was named Big 12 Men's Golfer of the Month, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
Schultz, a local product hailing from Andover, Kansas, was dominant in a month of September that was highlighted by his 11-under par 205 score on Colbert Hills to start the 2022-23 season. His performance included 16 birdies en route to three straight under-par rounds to top the individual leaderboard and lead the Cats to the team title at the Wildcat Invitational.
The individual championship was the 42nd in school history and sixth since head coach Grant Robbins arrived to helm the Wildcat program.
Schultz continued his hot start at the Old Town Collegiate, where he tied for 16th place at 1-under par 209 as K-State once again captured the team title. It's the first time since 2009 that the Wildcats have won back-to-back titles and the first time they've opened the season with consecutive titles since 1983.
Schultz has been instrumental in leading Kansas State to its first-ever ranking in the Robbins' era, as the Wildcats were ranked as the nation's No 21 team in the Buschnell/Golfweek D1 coaches poll.
The hot start for the former Kansas Amateur champion hasn't come as a surprise. Over the summer, he earned his second straight bid to the US Amateur, becoming only the fourth Wildcat to ever compete at the event in consecutive years.
Schultz is the seventh golfer in school history to be named the Big 12 Golfer of the Month and first since Jermey Gandon in 2018.
Schultz and the Wildcats will return to action October 10-11 as they travel to Corvallis, Oregon for the Oregon State Invitational. They will conclude their fall slate October 17-19 in the Big 12 Match Play Championship.
