1,000th Program Win

Big Second Half Sends K-State to 1,000th Program Victory

Nov 11, 2022 | Women's Basketball

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin - Kansas State trailed at halftime against Wisconsin, but scored 47 points in the second half including 31 in the final quarter to secure a 77-63 win over the Badgers and the 1,000th win in program history during the Brew City Battle at the home of the Milwaukee Brewers - American Family Field.

K-State is the 19th NCAA Division I member of the 1,000 win club. K-State is one of four schools in the nation that have 1,000 program wins and its current head coach has 600 or more career victories (Stanford, Connecticut & NC State).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wisconsin (1-1) used a 14-2 run to build a 23-13 lead after the first quarter. K-State shot 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from the field in the opening frame.
- Kansas State (2-0) began its comeback in the second quarter with a 12-2 run to pull within three, 29-26, following a Gabby Gregory 3-pointer with 2:49 to play in the quarter. Aiding in the comeback was solid defense, as K-State held the Badgers to 21.4 percent (3-of-14) shooting from the field in the second quarter.
- The Wildcats shot just 28.1 percent (9-of-32) from the field in the first half
- K-State trailed by three at the half, 33-30, but dashed out of the locker room with an 11-0 run to take a 43-37 lead with 6:08 remaining in the third quarter. A left-handed layup from Rebekah Dallinger started the run and was followed quickly by three-pointers from Serena Sundell, Sarah Shematsi and Gregory to force a Badger timeout.
- Following the 11-0 run, K-State was 1-of-12 from the field to close the third quarter as the Badgers squared the game at 46 entering the final quarter.
- The Wildcats used a 7-1 run to begin the fourth quarter to open a 53-47 lead with 8:01 remaining. Jaelyn Glenn connected on her second 3-pointer of the afternoon to start the run.
- After the Badgers closed to witin five, 56-51, the Wildcats answered with an 8-1 run midway through the fourth as Jaelyn Glenn hit her third 3-pointer of the day and was followed by a three by Gregory and Jaelyn Glenn added a steal and layup to force a Wisconsin timeout with 4:37 to play.
- K-State iced the game from the foul line in the final two minutes, shooting 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.
- K-State had three players in double figures, led by Gregory's game-high 25 points and followed by 17 from Sundell and 16 from Jaelyn Glenn off the bench.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie

Opening Statement
"Great environment. I'm a huge baseball fan so obviously this was a unique environment to be able to play in and I was kind of unsure of when you do this how's the shooting environment gonna be? How's the glare all those things and really it was decent. It was good. It was better than I expected. And I thought the environment was solid. But the the promoters of this event, I will say this, have done a great job with our team. We're certainly excited to play in it and I would do it again. I think it's a really good event. I don't like the 3:30 start. That would be my biggest complaint for the women's game is a 3:30 start. Hard to get a good crowd. But when we were struggling, I was kind of glad there was no one in the building."

On overcoming the 13-point deficit...
"They hit us in the mouth pretty good. And I will say that some of our young players or new players probably had more jitters. And in their prep was a little bit average. And we got hit in the mouth early. We weren't very physical at all. And then I thought we decided, we're gonna push back here and we're playing a different style. We're pressing a little more here. We got a lot out of the press. Today we're trying to shoot the three more so we know there's going to be ebbs and flows of good basketball in that. But I thought the key was just we played tougher. They weren't getting the easy looks and that was a big key for us.

On prepping for the shooting environment...
"I will say that it's a better shooting environment than I expected. And I walked the whole floor every place we go play. I look at glare. It was better than I expected. You really don't know. I mean, I've coached in some domes before where you go 'wow' this had a better feel than I expected. We didn't shoot the ball particularly well but we hit some big threes when we needed to. And we stayed the course of what we wanted to do, which was pace. We wanted the pace to be up in this game. And we wanted to really, really try to wear on them and we wanted to hunt threes. And I was pretty pleased for the most part with our group doing that."
