K-State Rally Halted in Fourth Quarter at Kansas

Feb 12, 2022 | Women's Basketball

LAWRENCE, Kansas – Trailing by nine entering the fourth quarter, K-State used a 9-0 run to square the game with six minutes remaining but Kansas ended the game with a 17-6 run to split the 2022 Dillons Sunflower Showdown on Saturday night in Allen Fieldhouse, 62-51. K-State secured the first meeting this season in Bramlage Coliseum in January.

With the momentum of the final four points of the third quarter, K-State (17-8, 7-6 Big 12) raced out to a 9-0 run to begin the fourth quarter and tie the score at 45. After two Serena Sundell free throws, Brylee Glenn made a driving layup and Laura Macke knocked down K-State's first 3-pointer of the night with 8:26 to play to force a Kansas timeout. The Wildcats would finish the night, 1-of-22 (.045) from 3-point range.

Following the Kansas timeout, Ayoka Lee made a layup to square the game. Lee ended the night with a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds. She also added three steals and two blocks. With her 18 points, Lee improved her career points total to 1,529 and passed Brit Jacobson (1994-98; 1,519 points) for 12th on the K-State career scoring list.

With her 13 rebounds, Lee became the 10th player in K-State women's basketball history with 800 or more career rebounds with a total of 807 rebounds and passing Megan Mahoney (2001-05; 804) for ninth on the program's career rebounds list.

After each team had two possessions with the score tied without a made field goal, Kansas (17-5, 8-4 Big 12) broke through first and rolled to a 14-2 run to build a 59-47 lead with 1:20 to play, as Chandler Prater scored eight straight points during the run.

The Wildcats ended the night at 32.8 percent (21-of-64) shooting. The Jayhawks completed the evening at 38.6 percent (22-of-57) shooting. Kansas was led by Zakiyah Franklin with 16 points.

In the first half, K-State trailed by as much as nine in the first quarter, but chipped away at the deficit and would capture its first lead of the opening half on a Brylee Glenn layup with 41 seconds left in the second quarter, 24-22. The Jayhawks squared the game up briefly on a banked in jumper shot.

With time running down in the second quarter, Lee caught a pass 12-feet from the rim from Sundell. Lee connected on her jumper before time expired to send the Wildcats into the locker room with a 26-24 lead. K-State outscored Kansas in the second quarter, 19-11.

K-State was limited to 0-15 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes, but shot 12-of-23 (.522) on two-point attempts.

After the Wildcats extended its lead to four, 30-26, Kansas used a 19-2 run over a seven-minute stretch to go in front, 45-32, 54 seconds to play in the third quarter. The Wildcats would cut the deficit to nine, 45-36, with two free throws from Lee and a layup from Sundell to roll into the fourth quarter with momentum.

Sundell joined Lee in double figures with 10 points, while also dishing four assists, pocketing three steals and blocking a shot.
