Women’s Tennis Faces off Against Arkansas on Saturday

Feb 04, 2022 | Tennis

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off a week break, the Kansas State women's tennis team will host Arkansas at 1 p.m., CT on Saturday (February 5) at Body First Tennis Center.

"We are glad to be back on the court this weekend after a week off," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "We look forward to being back into a routine competing every week from now on. Thankfully, we were able to focus on improvements and I am confident to see more progress out of our group tomorrow. Arkansas is a solid team and has a chance at being an NCAA Tournament team as well. These are the opportunities that we need to bring our best, especially at home."

K-State is currently 2-0 for the 2022 spring season after defeating the South Dakota Coyotes, 6-1, and the Missouri State Bears, 7-0, on January 22. They will look avenge a 7-0 loss to Razorbacks last season in Fayetteville.

The Wildcats began the season by picking up the doubles point from South Dakota with a 6-0 win by freshman Florentine Dekkers and senior Ioana Gheorghita over Estella Jaeger and Sonia Skobkareva at the No. 2 position.

Dekkers and Gheorghita claimed their second straight 6-0 doubles victory, dropping Missouri State's duo of Sandra Luckacova and Alyson Piskulic at the second spot. The pair improved their season record to 7-4 after playing together nine times during the fall campaign.

K-State's top doubles' pair of seniors Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares sealed the point against the Coyotes by rattling off the last four games of their set to earn a 6-3 victory over Jana Lazarevic and Habiba Aly.

In singles play, five Wildcats (Job, Linares, Dekkers, Gheorghita and Anna Turco) opened the spring season with victories at their respective positions. Job, who ranks 51st nationally in ITA, posted straight set wins at the No. 1 position, along with Dekkers, Linares, Gheorghita and Turco. Freshman Dinara Alloyarova also earned her first singles' victory in dual-match play with a straight-set win over Missouri State's Sandra Lukacova.

The Wildcats are halfway through a five-home match stretch and will take on Memphis and FAU on February 11-12.
