K-State Finishes Sixth at the Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Kansas State men's golf team carded a 1-over par 289 final round on Tuesday at the Louisiana Classics, held at the par-72, 6,898-yard Oakbourne Country Club to finish in sixth place with a three-round score of 7-under par 857
"For whatever reason, it was really tough for us to get anything going today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It seemed like for every birdie we made we followed it up with a bad mistake. We got off to a slow start, got things going a little bit in the middle of the round, and then finished very poorly."
K-State narrowly fell behind Houston, which finished in fifth place by the difference of one shot, but the Cats finished six strokes ahead of Louisiana Tech and picked up a ranked victory over No. 41 Little Rock.
"We have a young team, and I thought this week we played not-to-play poorly instead of playing to win," Robbins said. "It's something we will learn and get better from."
The Wildcats were led on the leaderboard by Laurenz Schiergen, a freshman who captured his career-high and first top-20 finish in a tie for 17th place at 3-under par 213 after a 1-over par 73 third round.
Schiergen just missed a top-10 finish after some tough holes on the back nine of his final round, but this performance, which included back-to-back 2-under par 70 rounds on Monday, is a great sign moving forward for the Wildcats as he can continue to be yet another key piece in this deep scoring lineup.
Cooper Schultz, a redshirt freshman from Wichita, Kansas, concluded his spring debut in a tie for 21st place finish at 2-under par 214 following a 2-over par 74 third round.
Senior Will Hopkins battled to put together another nice round with an even-par 72 final 18 to close out his week in a tie for 27th place at even-par 216.
Luke O'Neill responded well after a difficult second round on Monday to make a 26-spot jump and finish tied for 49th place at 5-over par 221. O'Neill, who is coming off his first career individual championship last week at the Colleton River Collegiate, fired a 2-under par 70 final round to make the late rise and end the event on a high note.
Tim Tillmanns, a junior, tied for 69th place at 8-over par 224 after carding a 4-over par 76 third round.
Texas A&M broke records and ran away with the team title at 47-under par 817, the best 54-hole score in the 37-year history of the event. The Aggies were led by Sam Bennett, who claimed the individual championship at 18-under par 198, which is also the lowest 54-hole score in the history of the Louisiana Classics.
While not the final round the Wildcats were hoping for, a sixth-place finish in the 17-team field is still a positive feat.
"In the big picture we finished sixth in a pretty strong field, and there's a lot of disappointment because we didn't play up to our standards," Robbins said. "I think that shows how far we've come and what we are capable of in the future."
Kansas State will now have almost a month away from action before they return for two more events, the Mossy Oak Invitational on April 11-12 and the Hawkeye Invitational on April 16-17, before the Big 12 Championship commences on April 25.
