WEST POINT, Miss. – Behind impressive play from freshman Laurenz Schiergen, the Kansas State men's golf team finished in fifth place following the final round of the Mossy Oak Invitational on Tuesday, held at the par-72, 7,212-yard Mossy Oak Golf Club.
The Cats closed out the event with a 2-over par 290 final round to bring their 54-hole total to 3-under par 861.
"Just really proud of the guys this week," head coach Grant Robbins said, whose team picked up three ranked victories against No. 18 Florida State, No. 19 Ole Miss and No. 47 UAB. "Today wasn't perfect by any means, but man they competed, and that's all you can ask for."
This is the fifth top-five finish for K-State this season and third of the spring. Through eight stroke-play events this season, the Wildcats team stroke average sits at 285.08, which is the best mark in school history.
Schiergen had a career week to finish in a tie for fourth place at 6-under par 210 and claim his first career top-five finish.
In just his fourth collegiate tournament after joining the Wildcats at semester, the freshman from Cologne, Germany carded back-to-back career best rounds with a 3-under par 69 first round and a 4-under par 68 second round, before closing the event on Tuesday with a 1-over par 73 final round.
"Laurie played extremely well this week," Robbins said. "He had a couple of bad breaks today but showed tremendous poise and was able to notch a top-five finish."
The 6-under par 210 performance, which included 17 birdies, is Schiergen's new career best 54-hole score. With 12 career rounds under his belt, he is now the team leader in stroke average at 71.33.
Another freshman Wildcat who had a great event was Nicklaus Mason, who finished tied for 12th place at 2-under par 214. Mason carded a 1-over par 73 final round to ensure his fourth career top-20 finish.
"Laurenz and Nick really came through for us and showed the potential they have as freshmen," Robbins said.
Tim Tillmanns and Will Hopkins tied for 46th place at 4-over par 220. Tillmanns made an impressive 17-spot rise on the leaderboard thanks to a 1-under par 71 third round. Hopkins closed out the event with a 1-over par 73 final round.
Luke O'Neill shot a 1-over par 73 third round to tie for 69th place at 8-over par 224. It wasn't the placement the former champion was hoping for, but he showed great resolve after a tough first round and put together the third most pars of anyone at the event with 38.
No. 3 Vanderbilt had another dominant round and won the team championship at 25-under par 839, 12 strokes ahead of No. 16 Auburn in second place. Gordon Sargent led the Commodores and captured the individual title at 12-under par 204.
Kansas State will look to keep this momentum going as they get set for a quick turnaround at the Hawkeye Invitational, this Saturday and Sunday. That will be the final event of the regular season before the Big 12 Championship commences, April 25-26, in Trinity, Texas.
