Hopkins, Schiergen Lead K-State to Fourth-Place Finish

Apr 17, 2022 | Men's Golf

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Kansas State men's golf team concluded the Hawkeye Invitational with a fourth-place finish at 15-over par 879 due to a pair of top-10 finishes from Will Hopkins and Laurenz Schiergen following final-round play on Sunday at the par-72, 7,157-yard Finkbine Golf Course.

The Wildcats wrapped up the event with a 3-over par 291 final round to move up one spot on the leaderboard, clinching their fourth top-five finish of the spring and sixth this season.

"I'm proud of how the guys hung in there today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It wasn't pretty, but our guys really grinded it out."

Hopkins put on one of the best performances of his senior campaign to claim his sixth career top-10 finish. The Lincolnshire, England product carded his second 1-under par 71 round of the event on Sunday as he tied for eighth at 1-under par 215. It's the fourth time this season that Hopkins has tallied multiple under-par rounds.

Hopkins' finish is another milestone heading into the postseason for the most experienced Wildcat on the roster, and it closed out a great week that saw him named a First Team Academic All-Big 12 honoree.

Schiergen, who has been a rising star for the Cats throughout the spring, used a 1-under par 71 third round to jump into a tie for 10th place at an even-par 216. This was the second career and second straight top-10 finish for the freshman, who was coming off a tie for fourth last week at the Mossy Oak Invitational. The Cologne, Germany continues to lead the team in stroke average at 71.47.

Luke O'Neill was another Wildcat who carded a 1-under par 71 final round, which shot him up 14 spots in the standings to tie for 27th place at 5-over par 221. He finished the event with a team-best 11 birdies.

"Laurie and Will both were solid all weekend, and Luke had a nice bounce-back round today," Robbins said.

Tim Tillmanns tied for 50th place at 11-over par 27 after he shot a 6-over par 78 third round. Nicklaus Mason tallied a 6-over par 78 third round to tie for 77th place at 22-over par 238.

Competing as an individual this weekend, Cooper Schultz finished in a tie for 62nd place at 14-over par 230 after carding a 3-over par 75 final round.

No. 28 Kansas won the event at 12-under par 852, with a narrow two-stroke victory over host-school Iowa. Harry Hillier led the Jayhawks and claimed the individual title at 8-under par 216.

"Unfortunately, we had to count a high one today," Robbins said. "It definitely wasn't our best tournament, but the fight was there. This is something we can learn and be better from."

With the regular season now behind them, the Wildcats will focus on postseason play and the upcoming Big 12 Championship, which is held April 25-27.
