Cats Finish Ninth at Big 12 Championship

TRINITY, Texas – The Kansas State men's golf team concluded the 2022 Big 12 Championship with a 16-over par 304 final round on Wednesday to finish in ninth place at 46-over par 910.
"Obviously very disappointed with the outcome," head coach Grant Robbins said. "I'm proud of our guys and how hard they competed. We just didn't play well this week. Our ballstriking was a huge issue, which on a course like this if you don't have complete control of your ball, you can make some big numbers in a hurry."
Despite the team finish, Nicklaus Mason played some solid golf this week for the Cats. The freshman shot a 4-over par final round and finished at 8-over par 224, good for a tie for 25th place. It was yet another positive performance in a season that saw the Shawnee, Kansas product capture four top-20 finishes and accumulate a 73.73 stroke average.
Will Hopkins, a senior, tied for 33rd place at 11-over par 227 after carding a 5-over par 77 in the third round. Hopkins' showing was highlighted by a 1-under par 71 first round that he shot on Tuesday, bringing his even or under par round total to a team-leading 17.
Next on the leaderboard for K-State was Laurenz Schiergen, who tied for 40th place at 14-over par 230. Though not the finish the freshman was looking for, he was still able to maintain his spot as the team leader in stroke average at 72.33
Tim Tillmanns tallied a 5-over par 77 third round to finish in 42nd place at 17-over par 233. Luke O'Neill was able to card his tournament-best round on Wednesday at 3-over par 75, as he finished at 18-over par and in 43rd place.
No. 1 Oklahoma claimed the 2022 Big 12 Championship at 14-under par 850, while Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech won the individual title at 8-under par 208.
The Cats will now turn their attention to the 2022 NCAA Men's Golf Selection Show, which will be held on May 4 at 3 p.m. (CT) on Golf Channel. K-State, which was on the bubble entering this week, is looking for its first regional selection since 2009.
"This is still a very young group, and they have a chance to be special," Robbins said. "Sometimes you have to experience disappointments like this in order to build that toughness needed to compete at the highest level. The guys will learn from this. Hopefully it motivates them to get better this summer so we can take that next step."
