Wildcats Ready for New Challenge at Colleton River
Mar 06, 2022 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – After opening the spring with a top-five finish, the Kansas State men's golf team hopes to continue that momentum into the Colleton River Collegiate, held Monday and Tuesday at the Colleton River Golf Club in Bluffton, South Carolina.
Â
"We are excited to be going back to Colleton River. This tournament is always a great experience," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's a strong field, an excellent venue and the members really come out and support this event."
K-State has had past success at this event, finishing fifth in 2020 and third in 2019. However, this year's tournament will be a little different than before.
Â
"We are playing a different course this year than in years past, moving from the Dye Course to the Nicklaus Course," Robbins said. "I've heard nothing but great things about the Nicklaus layout, and knowing Colleton River, it will be in tremendous shape."
Â
Robbins will send out Tim Tillmanns, Will Hopkins, Nicklaus Mason, Luke O'Neill and Laurenz Schiergen as the five in the scoring lineup to compete on the par-72, 7,042-yard Nicklaus Course. This is the same lineup that led K-State to a fourth-place finish at 5-under par 859 three weeks ago in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate.
Â
Tillmanns, who leads the team in stroke average at 70.80, left no doubt in his spring debut that he would once again be a low-scorer for the Wildcats as he captured a sixth-place finish at 4-under par 212, the second top-10 finish of his junior campaign.
Â
Hopkins, the lone senior in the lineup for K-State, is no stranger to the Colleton River Collegiate as he finished in 29th place in 2019 and in 19th place in 2020.
Â
Behind the two veterans is a trio of young talent in Mason and Schiergen, both freshmen, and O'Neill, a sophomore. The freshmen began the spring on a positive note, with Schiergen tying for 23rd place in his Wildcat debut and Mason claiming his second career top-20 finish in a tie for 13th place.Â
Â
"Our guys are playing really well, and we look to continue that momentum this week," Robbins said.Â
Â
The 15-team field in the Colleton River Collegiate includes fellow Big 12 foe Iowa State, along with Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Eastern Michigan, Georgia Southern, Indiana, Memphis, Miami, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers and South Florida.
Â
Play will begin Monday with the first 36 holes, before concluding on Tuesday with the final round. Fans can follow live scoring on GolfStat.com.
