Walks, Errors Doom Wildcats Against No. 6 Oklahoma State
Apr 01, 2022 | Baseball
Phillips launched his 37th career homer in the fourth inning, which tied the game at 2-2, to equal the Wildcats' career mark set by Scott Poepard (1994-97). The junior from Omaha, Nebraska, finished 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and four runs scored.
After falling behind 12-2, K-State (13-12, 0-4 Big 12) scored seven unanswered runs over the sixth and seventh innings. The Cowboys (19-7, 0-4 Big 12) scored 10 straight runs over two innings after Phillips' game-tying homer, including a six-run sixth inning.
"The end result is really the only thing that matters to me," said head coach Pete Hughes. "We've got competitive kids and competitive people; they're going to fight back. I wasn't surprised that we had a chance to tie that thing up and win the game, that's who we are.
"But unfortunately, we were chasing, and you give up a 10-spot in the middle innings, that's really a lot to overcome. We almost did it – and that's nice – but you get 10 walks and three errors, that's a lot of unnecessary traffic to make up for and that was the storyline of the game."
Relievers Blake Adams and Ty Ruhl totaled eight walks between them over a combined 1 1/3 innings. The pair was responsible for eight runs (six earned) on just two hits.
Adams entered the game after starter Blake Corsentino went 4 2/3 innings. Adams inherited runners on first and second with two outs and the first hitter he faced reached on an error that allowed one run to score.
Adams would walk the next four he faced, three coming with the bases loaded, before registering the lone out of his outing.
Ty Ruhl pitched the sixth inning and walked four straight OSU hitters before hitting Hueston Morrill with the bases full. After a sacrifice fly, which brought the Cowboys' run to seven straight without the aid of a hit, Caeden Trinkle connected on a three-run homer to cap the stretch of 10 unanswered runs.
Ben Weber, making his season and K-State debut, gave his offense a chance to chip away at the lead, as he held Oklahoma State without a hit over the game's three innings. The junior-college transfer struck out three and walked just one.
"Ben Weber, who hasn't pitched all year and has been waiting for his opportunity, made the best of his opportunity and did a great job," Hughes added. "He allowed us to get back in that thing."
Jeff Heinrich and Cash Rugely each registered two-run homers as part of the Cats' four-run sixth, cutting the deficit from 10 to six. It was Heinrich's third homer of the day while Rugely recorded his initial of the season.
Oklahoma State starter Justin Campbell left the game after six innings, as he surrendered season highs in hits (6) and runs (6). Campbell did earn the win after striking out eight and walking two.
Phillips drew a bases-loaded walk in the next inning before Orlando Salinas drove in two with a pinch-hit single with two outs, bringing the Wildcats within striking distance at three.
Dominic Hughes, pinch hitting, represented the game-tying run in the seventh but OSU reliever Roman Phansalkar escaped the jam by inducing an inning-ending groundout.
Phansalkar tossed a scoreless eighth before giving way to closer Trevor Martin. Martin gave up a single in the ninth to Cole Johnson but managed to collect his team-best eighth save of the season.
Four Wildcats finished with two-hit days while four also drove in a pair.
K-State finished with an 11-7 edge in total hits, hitting three homers while OSU hit two.
The Cats hit .364 with runners in scoring position to the Cowboys' .091.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Jake Thompson launched a two-run homer in the top of the first for Oklahoma State, as he registered one of three hits in the first off Corsentino. Corsentino escaped further damage after inducing back-to-back groundouts with a runner in scoring position.
After K-State tied the game on Phillips' solo homer in the fourth, Oklahoma State scored the game's next 10 runs – four in the fifth before a six-run sixth.
Adams issued four consecutive walks – three with the bases loaded – in the fifth. With the bases full again the sixth, Ruhl walked one and hit another to allow six unanswered runs to score without the aid of a base hit.
Trenkle's three-run homer capped the six-run frame and gave the Cowboys a 10-run cushion.
K-State responded with four in the home half, as Heinrich and Rugely each lifted two-run homers. A bases-loaded walk drawn by Phillips and a two-run, pinch-hit single by Salinas plated three more to push the Cats' run to seven straight runs.
With the tying run at the plate in the seventh, Phansalker dodged more damage with a threat-ending groundout that stranded two.
