OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Kansas State women's rowing team traveled to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships on Friday (April 15) and Saturday (April 16) on Melton Hill Lake.

"Overall, we're happy to see the team continue to make progress," stated head coach Patrick Sweeney. "Our performance throughout the weekend shows that fitness across the whole team is good. Each boat has made the most of the water time we've had, and we've continued to see improvement across the season."

The trip was highlighted by three gold medal performances in the 1v8+, the 3v8+, and the 1v4+. The 2v4+ also walked away with a silver medal.

Day One Recap

Low wind and mild temperatures set the stage for a solid day of racing on Melton Hill Lake. The 2v4+ kicked off timed trials competing in the Women's Novice 4+. The all-freshmen crew, consisted of coxswain Sarah Schrage, Gracyn McClain, Madelyn Barrett, Jayden Brandt and Annika Senn and had the second fastest time out of 19 boats. Their time of 7:25.316 advanced them to semifinals later in the day.

The crew placed first during semifinals, earning a spot in Saturday's A final with a time of 8:01.866.

Friday continued with the 3v8+ crew competing in the Novice 8+ timed trials. The freshmen boat comprised of coxswain Paige Fox and rowers Neva Roenne, Jordan Girkin, Grace Hendrickson, Kendra Hamman, Chloe Daniels, Faith Gates, Emily Stark and Halle Fee finished in 7:11.762 earning a spot in first heat of semifinals.

The crew went on to place first in their semifinal heat coming in at 7:10.258, earning a spot in Saturday's A final.

In the third race of the day, the 1v4+ finished their timed trial in 7:44.354. The lineup consisted of sophomore coxswain Sydney Smith alongside sophomores Lindsey DeVreugd, Alyssa Buettner and freshmen Anita Eckhardt and Catie Wood.

Day Two Recap

Saturday (April 16) began with scattered showers and light rain. Wind remained low throughout the day. The Cats continued into Day 2 with the same lineups as Day 1.

Starting finals for the day, The 2v4+ came in second place during the A Final, earning a silver medal in the Novice 4+ race. Their time of 8:02.844 was one second behind Wisconsin in first place.

"Today was our boats' first medal of the season but more than that we made a lot of progress as a unit," McClain said. "Winning a medal was great but being able to feel the progress and power in the boat was even better."

The 3v8+ raced to a first-place finish in the Novice 8+ A Final, pushing past five other teams, including Clemson, Purdue and Tampa. With a time of 7:15.099, K-State earned their first gold medal of the day.

"We started off the docks slightly behind other crews but quickly walked through them, taking seats one at a time as Paige Fox, our coxswain, was calling them out and giving us goals for the next seat to take," said Hamman. "As we walked through the other boats and gained open water there was so much excitement through the boat. We knew we wanted to keep fighting to win by as much as possible."

Having won medals in both Novice events, the team stayed focus competing in the semifinals and finals in the Women's Varsity 4+ and the Women's Varsity 8+ races.

The 1v4+ team claimed second place in their semifinals heat with a time of 7:51.293, the third fastest time behind Central Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Later that same day in the A Final, the Wildcats fought their way to a gold medal finishing at 7:44.980, nearly three seconds ahead of Wisconsin.

"There was some serious competition from Wisconsin coming out of our start. For the first 750 meters we were down on every boat except for maybe one. But coming into the 1000 we got sharper and quicker, and just more together so we were able to make some solid pushes into medaling territory," said DeVreugd. "Coming in the last 500 (Sydney) Smith called for us to get quicker and we started our finish pretty soon after that. I felt like this was one of our most together finishes where we built off the previous strokes. The speed behind the boat for the last 250 was solid and I could tell we pushed together to win."

In the women's varsity 8+ semifinals, the 1v8+ group clocked in at 6:59.706 with the 2v8+ coming in at 7:03.179. The times moved them to the A Finals later in the day.

In the A final, the 2v8+ finished in sixth with a time of 7:17.780. The 1v8+ dominated the competition, crossing the finish line more than four seconds ahead of second place Wisconsin. The Wildcats earned the third gold medal of the day with a time of 7:04.18.

"During the finals race, we went in unsure of how we would compare to the other boats we were up against. Our boat had a strong start and worked our way up each boat, stroke by stroke until we had the lead," said Plum. "Even though we had open water on all other boats around the 1500-meter mark, the girls in my boat finished the race the same way they started it and responded to my calls together."

"I'm really proud of how my girls handled the races and really went for it each time we were out on the water."

A successful weekend of racing showcased the progress the team has made from week to week.

"Throughout each race we have improved tremendously whether that be by our finish time, our technique, or our execution of the race plan," stated Hamman. "There are things we will work on and improve before the next race and seeing how much we have improved already makes me excited to see how much further we can get to reaching our potential."

"Our team is young, and they are learning more and more each week. Every race is an opportunity to prepare for the rest of the season," said Sweeney. "The team has done well and we're ready to keep moving forward."

The Wildcats will hit the road on Saturday (April 23) to faceoff against the Creighton Bluejays for the Creighton Duel in Omaha, Nebraska.
