K-State Prepares for Dillons Sunflower Showdown on Saturday
Apr 29, 2022 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team will travel to Lawrence, Kansas for the Dillons Sunflower Showdown on the Kansas River at Burcham Park on Saturday (April 30).
Â
Racing will begin at 8 a.m. with the 1v8+. Other races will follow.
Â
"Looking at the weekend we are expecting some tight racing. We have been making changes to lineups and the results have been positive," said head coach Patrick Sweeney. "We are confident that we have gained more boat speed."
 Â
The team is coming off a successful weekend at the Creighton Duel, where the 1v8+, the 2v8+, the 1v4+, and the 3v8+ won each of their events respectively. Competition with Creighton was impacted by multiple changes to the race schedule and difficult conditions, a common theme throughout the season for the Cats.
Â
"Winds don't look favorable this weekend, but if our athletes maintain the focus they've brought to each race, we can get some good racing in," said Sweeney. "The team has handled themselves well and we hope to see that reflected in the results of each crew."
Â
During the 2022 spring season, the Wildcats have also made appearances at the Hornet Invitational, the Sunshine State Invitational, and the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships. The SIRA Championships and the Sunshine State Invitational were highlighted by multiple medal performances.
Â
At SIRAs, K-State earned three gold medals in the 3v8+, 1v4+ and the 1v8+. The 2v4+ also walked away with a silver medal.
Â
While competing at the Sunshine State Invitational, K-State collected two silver medals in the 3v8+ and the 1v4+.
Â
K-State will make their final regular season appearance at the 2022 Big 12 Rowing Championships on Sunday (May 15) in Austin, Texas.
