Men’s 4x400-Meter Relays Squad Claims Runner-Up Spot at Big 12 Outdoors
May 15, 2022 | Track & Field
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Kansas State track and field team pulled out a second-place finish in the men's 4x400-meter relay squad to complete action at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday (May 15) at Fuller Track and Field.
After three days of competition, the Wildcats finished in eighth place with 56 points in the men's division and eighth place with a score of 41 points in the women's division. The overall winner was Texas on both sides with 172.5 points for the women's and 161 points on the men's side.
"Individually, we had a number of quality performances, personal bests and breakthroughs," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "For the most part, the athletes that competed this weekend did a nice job. We are just missing too many quality athletes as is reflected by the team scores. Having said that, both teams did surpass the point totals that I had projected prior to the finals today. Our relays did a nice job, particularly the 4x400-meter. They all competed well."
The relay crew, comprised of junior Sean Wilson, sophomore Kyle Gale, junior Tim Lambert, Jr. and freshman Antonio Hanson, clocked in a program-best time on a track with altitude of 3:04.27.
The women's relay team, made up of fifth-year senior Wurrie Njadoe, junior Shalysa Wray, junior O'Shalia Johnson and senior Alex Ferguson, recorded a time of 3:35.08 and came in third place.
Junior Kassidy Johnson powered through to the very end in the women's 1,500-meter finals and took home third place. Johnson passed TCU's Gracie Morris in the final moments to finish with a time of 4:23.79.
The K-State women's 4x100-meter relay squad came out with a fifth-place finish overall. The relay team, made up of freshman Velecia Williams, Wray, junior Vitoria Sena Batista Alves and Njadoe, clocked in a time of 44.86.
Wray also competed in the 400-meter dash final after having a qualifying time of 52.17, which was a personal best for the Cayman Islands native. It was tough competition and Wray came out in sixth place with a time of 52.85.
Sixth place in the men's 4x100-meter relay went to the Wildcats. Senior Carson Lackey, freshman Darian Clarke, junior Donovan Turner and Lambert recorded a time of 40.51, a season best for the crew.
In the men's 1,500-meter final, junior Hadley Splechter ran his way to a time of 3:46.72 and placed sixth. His time was almost a full second ahead of Texas' Yusuf Bizimana in seventh (3:47.69).
Gale completed the 400-meter final in 45.77 and clinched sixth place for K-State.
In his first attempt in the men's triple jump, junior Devon Richardson reached a personal-best mark of 15.80m/51-10, which is the ninth best mark in program history. Richardson finished the event in seventh place.
Up next for K-State is the NCAA West Preliminary in Fayetteville, Arkansas on May 25-28. The Top 48 athletes in the nation in each event will split between the West Preliminary and East Preliminary, which is held at IU in Bloomington, Indiana.
