McCall Punches Ticket to NCAA on First Day of NCAA West Preliminary
May 25, 2022 | Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – On his second throw of the day, sophomore Kade McCall earned a spot at nationals on Wednesday (May 25) at the NCAA West Preliminary at John McDonnell Field.
McCall punched his ticket to nationals with a throw of 64.95m/213-1, placing 12th out of 46 competitors in the men's hammer throw.
"It's been a goal of his all year to make it to Eugene, so to see that through is good," stated assistant coach Greg Watson. "The bottom line at this meet is to position yourself to advance and he did that, so although it wasn't his best throwing, the job got done for this one! He's in good shape so he's got a chance to improve on his best in a couple weeks!"
With the fifth best time in heat four of the men's 1,500-meter run, junior Hadley Splechter will move on to the quarterfinals in the 1,500-meter after running a time of 3:46.85 and earning 28th overall.
"Hadley ran well," said assistant coach Ryun Godfrey. "He closed in 55.7 which is pretty impressive."
Also making his way into the quarterfinals was sophomore Kyle Gale. In the 400-meter dash, Gale clocked in a time of 46.56 which put him in 22nd. Freshman Antonio Hanson was close behind in 24th with a time of 46.59, but was just shy of qualifying to the next round.
With a throw of 60.74m/199-3, sophomore Joe Placek led the way for K-State with a throw of 60.74m/199-3 and finished in 33rd. Right behind Placek was sophomore Luke Ralston. The Overland Park, Kansas native had a heave of 60.62m/198-11 and ended the event in 34th.
Closing out the day was the men's 800-meter run. With a time of 1:50.84, fifth-year senior Travis Hodge placed 35th.
"Travis gave great effort and that is all we can ever ask," stated Godfrey. "I'm proud of Travis. It's been a pleasure coaching him. He has given his best to this program and we are better for it."
The Wildcats will kick off day two of the NCAA West Preliminary on Thursday (May 26) at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw at the John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
