Numerous School Records Close Out Final Day of West Preliminary

May 28, 2022 | Track & Field

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Kansas State track and field team made sure that the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary at the John McDonnell Field on Saturday (May 28) was the best day. The women's team set three school records and added three more national qualifiers along with one more qualifying relay team to the list.

"Everyone that competed today moved on," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "That is the big part. The competition part is great. The whole purpose of this meet is to move on. That is all that matters. The fact that everyone did that today is what you come here hoping to get done."

Fifth year senior Wurrie Njadoe set the school record time and ran a personal best time of 22.90 in the women's 200-meter dash. She placed 12th and will advance to nationals.

"This is very special," said assistant coach Vincent Johnson. "She trains hard, and this is just an example of what she has been doing in training. I think she did a good job of executing. Today she executed the race properly. I am proud of her and she has been a great K-State athlete."

Njadoe also competed in the 100-meter run and clocked in another school record time of 11.16 (2.7). The Shoreline, Washington native claimed 15th overall.

"This is the best way to end my senior year," explained Njadoe. "Trying to make it for the third time, nationals are tough and this whole week was nerve wracking. I didn't get into the 100-meter, but ran a fast time still. All focus was on the 200-meter. This has been a great experience. Since the beginning, we trained for this meet. I have been running 400-meters and 4x400-meters to prepare me for a meet like this."

Running almost a full second faster than her personal-best, junior Kassidy Johnson claimed an automatic qualifying ticket to the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800-meter run. Johnson finished second in her heat and fifth overall.

"That was exciting," said assistant coach Ryun Godfrey. "That was an extremely competitive field. It seemed like all three heats really stepped it up. Kassidy did a great job, put herself in a great spot and got into the home stretch. She did a super job."

Junior and Tokyo Olympian Shalysa Wray punched herself a ticket to nationals after clocking in a time of 52.35 in the women's 400-meter dash, closing out the event in 10th place.

The women's 4x400-meter relay was the final event of the entire meet. The team, made up of Njadoe, junior O'Shalia Johnson, Wray and senior Alex Ferguson, ran a season best time of 3:33.83, the eighth best time in program history. K-State placed 11th and advance to Eugene, Oregon.

The Wildcats will take a short break before sending eight individuals and two relay squads to the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon on June 8-11 at Hayward Field.
