Fajardo Collects Big 12 Pitcher, Co-Newcomer of the Week Honors

May 09, 2022 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State right-handed pitcher German Fajardo, who picked up a win against Wichita State before preserving Saturday's win over rival Kansas, was tabbed as the Big 12's Pitcher of the Week and Co-Newcomer of the Week, the Conference Office announced Monday.

Fajardo, a sophomore transfer from Arizona, turned in career highs in both innings (6) and strikeouts (10) in his start against Wichita State last Tuesday. Fajardo took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, as his final line showed just one hit and one walk allowed in earning the 3-1 victory.

In the win, the Nogales, Arizona, native was perfect through three innings and retired 16 of 17 Shockers at one point.

Fajardo followed up that performance by not allowing a base hit over 2 2/3 relief innings in K-State's 5-2 win over the Jayhawks. He struck out two in earning his second save of the season.

For the week, Fajardo totaled 8 2/3 scoreless innings with just one hit and two walks against him. Opponents combined to hit just .038 off him, as his efforts helped K-State to a 3-1 week against a pair of in-state rivals.

Fajardo leads the Wildcats with his 2.38 season ERA, striking out 46 over 33 innings in his initial season at K-State. He has not allowed an earned run over his last three appearances, a span of 11 innings while totaling 14 strikeouts. Fajardo has held opponents without an earned run in nine of his 13 outings this season.

The honors are the first weekly awards of Fajardo's career and the fifth and sixth by a Wildcat this season, as he joins Blake Adams (Co-Pitcher, Co-Newcomer), Josh Nicoloff (Newcomer) and Dylan Phillips (Player). It marks the 15th weekly league accolade under fourth-year head coach Pete Hughes, the sixth newcomer-of-the-week distinction and fifth pitcher-of-the-week award.

The Wildcats are set for their final home series of the season, as Baylor visits Tointon Family Stadium for a three-game series starting Friday. Senior Day will take place prior to the series finale on Sunday, which is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
