
Wray Wins Two Titles at Cayman Islands Championships

The rising senior sprinter won the titles in the 200 and 400 meters
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Rising senior sprinter Shalysa Wray recently won national championships in the women's 200 and 400 meters at the Cayman Islands National Championships.
Wray was among several Wildcats who competed international competitions in the past week, including the National Championships for the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.
Wray, who represented the Cayman Islands at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games, won the 400-meter competition by more than 7 seconds over second-place finisher Jaden Francis with a time of 53.23. She then defeated Aaliyannah Anderson by 2 seconds to win the 200 meters with a time of 23.58.
Wray is coming off an impressive junior season at K-State, in which, she advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400 meters. She finished 23rd in the semifinals with a time of 52.94.
Wray has now qualified for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will run from Tuesday-Sunday, August 2-7 in Birmingham, England.
Five Wildcats (freshman Antonio Hanson, fifth-year senior Wurrie Njadoe, sophomore Rhianna Phipps, fifth-year senior Taishia Pryce and freshman Velecia Williams) recently competed at the Jamaican Association of Athletics Associations (JAAA) National Senior and Junior Championships at National Stadium in Kingston.
Former Wildcat Kimberly Williamson opened the JAAA Senior Championships by winning the women's high jump title with a mark of 1.88m/6-2 on June 23. Williamson won the national title in the event with the same mark at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Hanson advanced to the semifinals of the men's 400 meters after posting a time of 46.10 to place 14th in the preliminaries on June 24. He placed 15th in the semifinals on June 25 with a time of 46.57. He capped his outdoor season by earning a spot in the NCAA West Preliminary, finished 24th with a time of 46.59.
Phipps finished fourth in the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.89m/42-3.50. The 2021 Second Team Indoor All-American did not compete during the 2021-22 campaign.
Williams edged Pryce on attempts in the women's long jump competition with each Wildcat posting a mark of 6.29m/20-7.75 to finish fourth and fifth, respectively.
Williams enjoyed a solid freshman campaign, as she earned a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the long jump before finishing 17th with a mark of 6.12m/20-1. Pryce did not have any outdoor eligibility remaining this spring, but she did cap her career on stellar note by earning First Team All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a sixth-place finish with a mark of 6.49m/21-3.50.
Rising junior sprinter Kyle Gale was part of the men's 4x400-meter relay team who competed at the NGC-NAAATT Open Championships in Trinidad and Tobago on June 26. The quartet of Gale, Rasheem Griffith, Miguel Nicholas and Jonathan Jones defeated the Trinidad squad by more than 17 seconds with a time of 3:04.27.
Gale will represent Barbados at the inaugural Caribbean Games, which are set to start on Wednesday (June 29) and run until Sunday, July 3 on the island of Guadeloupe.
Fifth-year senior Kyle Alcine recently competed in the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) National Senior and Junior Championships at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, where he finished third in the men's high jump competition.
Alcine posted a height of 2.05m/6-8 ¾ to earn the bronze medal behind former World Champion Donald Thomas (2.25m/7-4.50) and Shaun Miller, Jr. (2.15m/7-0.50).
Alcine capped his 2021-22 season by earning Second Team All-America honors in the high jump at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He cleared a height of 2.10m/6-10.75 to finish in a tie for 15th place.
