K-State Collects Six Academic All-Big 12 HonorsLinares Awarded With Two ITA Central Regional Accolades
The Wildcats have won the All-Academic Team honors seven times in the last eight years
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's tennis team was honored again for its academic success, as the program was recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as an All-Academic Team for the seventh time in the last eight years.
In addition, six members (Florentine Dekkers, Ioana Gheorghita, Maria Linares, Rosanna Maffei, Anna Turco and Manami Ukita) of the team were named as ITA Scholar-Athletes.
"It says a lot about our ladies to be just as competitive on the court as they are in the classroom," said head coach Jordan Smith. "I'm happy for our program to earn this academic award and for six ladies to be named scholar-athletes."
The ITA All-Academic Award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letterwinners are factored into the cumulative team GPA for the academic year.
K-State was one of nine Big 12 schools named a 2021-22 All-Academic Team, while its six ITA Scholar-Athlete selections tied three other schools (Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU) for the third-most in the league.
Linares and Turco earned the Scholar-Athlete award for the fourth consecutive season, while Gheorghita and Maffei each won the honor for the third straight season. Ukita collected the accolade for the second time, while Dekkers, a freshman, was a recipient for the first time in her playing career.
To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letterwinner, have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their school for at least two semesters.
K-State has collected seven ITA All-Academic Team honors and 46 Scholar-Athlete over the past eight seasons after having only two ITA team awards and eight Scholar-Athletes from 2002-13.
Gheorghita, Linares, Maffei, Turco and Ukita, along with Karine-Marion Job, were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Turco was one of five student-athletes nominated with a 4.0 GPA.
In addition to her academic honors, Linares was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team after leading the Wildcats in both singles (14) and doubles (10) victories. She was also selected as the ITA Central Region Most Improved Senior as well as the recipient of the Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award.
The Wildcats concluded the 2021-22 season with 10-13 record, including a 1-8 mark in Big 12 play.
