
K-State Travels to Lincoln for Greeno/Dirksen Invitational

The Wildcats will compete in the meet for the first time since 2019
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday (September 17) for the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational at Mahoney Park. The women will compete in a 5k race at 10 a.m., CT with the men's 8k race following at 10:45 a.m., CT.
K-State will be joined in the race by co-hosts Nebraska and Nebraska Wesleyan as well as 15 others.
Both teams are coming off strong performances with the women finishing first and the men second in the season opener at the Bob Timmons Classic in Lawrence, Kan., at Rim Rock Farm on Sept. 3. It was the first event title for the women since capturing the Vic Godfrey Open on Sept. 8, 2018.
The squad are both ranked in the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Top 15 with the women sitting at No. 7 and the men at No. 14. The Oklahoma State men's and women's teams are both No. 1 in the Midwest Region poll.
The K-State women's team is riding momentum going into the second meet after placing five runners in the top 10. Hannah Stewart placed second overall at the Bob Timmons Classic, running her personal best and the fastest 5k for a K-State woman at Rim Rock Farm at 18:07.7. Cailan Steward (18:22.1) and Grace Meyer (18:32.2) placed third and fourth, respectively, as three Wildcats took residence in the top-five.
The men took second place behind Kansas with 35 points as Hadley Splechter secured the third place spot with a new 6k personal best at 18:36.4. Stephen Kielhofner (18:42.7) and Jack Vincent (18:52.0) also ran new personal-bests filling out the top-10 at sixth and eighth place finishes, respectively.
The Wildcats have competed in the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational one other time in 2019 when the men finished second with 79 points and the women eighth out of 16 with 202 points.
The course at the Mahoney Park Golf Course is not new to six athletes who competed in the first meet in 2019. Hannah Stewart (53rd; 19:21.5) led the way with Sydney Burton (97th; 20:22.0) a minute behind. For the men, Hadley Splechter (15th; 25:17.4) placed in the top-20 with fellow runners David Lutgen (30th; 25:40.2), Jack Moore (54th; 26:14.8) and Mike Rohlinger (105th; 26:55.0) not far behind.
This will be the first collegiate 5k for freshman Katie Schwartkopf and first 8k for Carson McEachern.
The Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational is named after long time coaches Greeno (Nebraska Wesleyan) and Dirksen (Nebraska-Lincoln).
