K-State Set to Host Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's golf team, which came in 55th in the latest Golfweek rankings, hosts the 2023 Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, at the par-72, 6,446-yard Colbert Hill Golf Course.
This will be the 25th edition of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, an event K-State has won five times, while the Wildcats have also produced the individual medalist on three occasions. Kansas State is hosting the event at Colbert Hills for the 12th time and the first since 2021 when the Cats finished in third place.
"We are looking forward to the opportunity to compete at home," head coach Stew Burke said. "Playing in front of a home crowd is always a special occasion for our players, especially our seniors as this will be the last tournament they play at Colbert Hills. The golf course is in great shape, and we have a solid game plan. Playing at home brings an added pressure to perform, but this team is capable of handling the pressure as they look to continue their strong start from our first event."
All eight members of the team will compete this week at Colbert Hills with K-State using the same scoring lineup as its last tournament in seniors Gabriela McNelly and Haley Vargas, junior Carla Bernat and freshmen Julia Ballester Barrio and Alenka Navarro. Senior Napua Glossner, junior Remington Isaac and sophomore Noa van Beek will compete as individuals.
K-State's scoring lineup produced an 11th-place finish among a difficult 15-team field in the season-opening event, the Schooner Fall Classic. K-State was in contention for a top-five finish after a second-round score of 278, the second-lowest gross score in school history. Navarro led the Wildcats with a 22nd-place finish following a 1-over par 211, while Bernat tied for 34th at 4-over par 214.
Joining the Wildcats this week at Colbert Hills is Bradley, BYU, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Middle Tennessee, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston and Rutgers. Additionally, Incarnate Word will bring one individual.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday with the final round coming on Tuesday, and play will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on both days. The event is free to the public, and fans can follow live scoring at www.Golfstat.com.
