Oct 13, 2023 | Women's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off a week of preparation after its home tournament, the Kansas State women's golf team will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee, to face stiff competition at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, Sunday through Tuesday, at the par-71, 5,965-yard Cherokee Country Club.
Â
This is the first time the Wildcats will ever compete in this event, which features seven teams ranked in the top 50 of the latest Golfweek rankings in No. 8 Ole Miss, No. 10 Clemson, No. 16 UCF, No. 26 Pepperdine, No. 28 Kansas, No. 39 Maryland and No. 46 Louisville. Also joining K-State in Tennessee are Chattanooga, East Tennessee State, Kent State, NC State, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
Â
"This event is set up very similar to an NCAA Regional as we will see a lot of the top teams in the nation on a tight, fast golf course," head coach Stew Burke said. "Our priority will be to have a great practice round, put together an awesome game plan and stick to it throughout the tournament. We are coming into this event off of a strong performance at home, and we would like to build upon the momentum and compete hard."
Â
K-State, which is competing in the state of Tennessee for the first time in program history, will use a different scoring lineup this week in juniors Carla Bernat and Remington Isaac, freshman Alenka Navarro and seniors Haley Vargas and Napua Glossner.
Â
Bernat, a native of Castellon, Spain, is coming off an individual victory at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Colbert Hills last week, helping the Wildcats finish in third place. A transfer from Tulane, Bernat carded a 5-under par 211 to produce the Wildcats' first individual medalist honor since 2020 and the first outright victory since 2019. She leads the team with a 70.83 stroke average through two events.
Â
Competing as an individual, Isaac turned in a 3-under par 213 last week at Colbert Hills to finish in second place, setting new career bests in 54-hole score and placing.
Â
Navarro, a freshman from Mexico City, Mexico, is in the scoring lineup for a third-straight event and holds a 72.67 stroke average. She recorded the first top-20 finish of her career at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational when she tied for 16th.
Â
A product of Lubbock, Texas, Vargas is also in the scoring lineup for a third-straight event after coming off an individual appearance in the NCAA San Antonio Regional last season.
Â
Glossner is part of the scoring lineup for the first time this season thanks to a quality showing as an individual last week when she finished in fourth place. The San Diego, California, native put together a 54-hole score of 1-over par 217 thanks to a career-low round of 1-under par 71 during the final round.
