MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State men's and women's cross country teams begin postseason races starting with the Big 12 Championship on Saturday (Oct. 28) in Ames, Iowa at the Iowa State Cross Country Course.

The men's 8k will start at 10 a.m., CT with the women's 6k following at 11 a.m., CT. Admission is free to the public, with both races streamed on ESPN+.

This will be the first conference race with new member schools BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF. BYU's men and women have won or finished runner-up in every race so far this season, sitting in the USTFCCCA Mountain rankings top-three since the preseason poll. UCF will join West Virginia as the two schools with only a women's team.

In the latest USTFCCCA rankings released on Oct. 16, the K-State women jumped up five spots to no. 7 in the Midwest region, the men's team at no. 15. Also in the Midwest is Oklahoma State and Iowa State, no. 1 and no. 2, respectively, in both the men's and women's polls. Kansas is also featured with the men at no. 6 and women at no. 8.

"We got some really power pack teams in the conference," head coach Randy Cole said. "We can place pretty high in the conference, if we do that in this conference that's saying something, we got national caliber teams. We got nothing to lose except get in there and compete well and we'll see what happens."

This will be the first race of the season for fifth year senior Sydney Burton and freshman Christine Jerono. Burton brings leadership and experience to the team as one of the top runners for the women last season.

During the Pre-National, Panorama Farms Classic, on Oct. 14, the women's team won the 6k orange race with 116 points, led by freshman Josephine Wanjiku who finished first overall in a new personal best time of 20:37.3. The men's team finished fifth with 139 points, highlighted by senior Kerby Depenbusch with one of his best races since 2020, finishing 7th in the men's 8k orange race in 24:33.8.

Last season during the Big 12 Championship in Lubbock, Texas, at the Chaparral Ridge Cross Country Course, the men's team finished fourth with 123 points, 64 points behind third place Texas. The women's team finished seventh with 197 points, 17 points shy of sixth place finisher Baylor.
