Wildcats Conclude Fall Schedule at Steelwood Intercollegiate
Oct 27, 2023 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team will put the finishing touches on its fall schedule as the Wildcats travel to Loxley, Alabama, for the Steelwood Intercollegiate, Saturday and Sunday at the par-72, 7,032-yard Steelwood Country Club.
It will be the third time the Wildcats will play in this event and the first since 2021 as Steelwood CC went through a significant renovation last year. In 2021, the Wildcats finished in fifth place out of 14 teams with a 54-hole score of 7-under par 857. In 2018, K-State finished in ninth.
"We are excited to get back to Steelwood this weekend," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's a great golf course, and from what I understand, they have made some tremendous improvements. The green complexes are a little more severe now, so it's going to be important that we are precise on our approach shots and keep the ball below the hole as much as possible. It's a strong field and will be a great test as we look to finish the fall on a high note."
K-State will utilize the lineup of senior Luke O'Neill, juniors Cooper Schultz and Nicklaus Mason, and sophomores Ben Stoller and Alex Lindstrom for the first time this season. Additionally, junior JP Roller will compete as an individual.
O'Neill leads the Cats with a 70.17 stroke average followed closely by Schultz at 70.33. A native of Connemara, Ireland, O'Neill has posted a pair of top-15 finishes in K-State's two stroke-play events, including a sixth-place showing at the Wildcat Invitational to open the season.
Schultz, a product of Andover, Kansas, has two top-20 finishes with a highwater mark of a tie for third at the Wildcat Invitational.
Mason and Lindstrom are next on the squad in terms of stroke average at 71.33 and 71.67, respectively. Both players finished in the top-10 at the Wildcat Invitational, including a second-place finish by Lindstrom while competing as an individual. He finds himself in the scoring lineup for a second-straight stroke play event.
K-State is part of a difficult 14-team field, which includes Alabama, Chattanooga, Indiana, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Rice, Rutgers, host-school South Alabama, UAB, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
A shotgun start to the first 36 holes on Saturday will begin at 8:30 a.m., and live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
