
K-State Advances Four Women in Singles Semifinal Draws

WACO, Texas- The K-State women's tennis team competed in a full day of matches on Friday (Nov. 10) during the second day of the Big 12 Fall Invite in Waco, Texas, at Hurd Tennis Center.
The Wildcats battled in multiple singles three set matches in both the quarterfinal and consolation round while claiming a doubles win.
In the quarterfinal round, sophomore Vanesa Suarez claimed the first three set win, defeating #51 Dana Guzman of Oklahoma, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6. Fellow sophomore Maria Santos was also victorious in three sets, winning 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 against Houston's Elena Trencheva.
Freshman Charlotte Keitel was victorious in low scoring straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, against Kansas' Silvia Maria Costache. Competing in her first singles match of the tournament, senior Aleen Quamar also swept in straight sets against Texas Tech's Camryn Stepp, 6-4, 6-1.
Junior Veronika Kulhava was the only one to drop a match in the quarterfinals, not able to keep up against Kendall Kovick from BYU, while winning the first set 6-1, she encountered a high scoring second set before dropping the tiebreaker, losing 1-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Senior Manami Ukita and freshman Tereza Polakova also suffered tough losses in three sets. Ukita claimed the first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3) but fell short in the following sets to Iowa State's Juliette Nask, 3-6, 2-10. Polakova also won her first set but could not follow through, losing, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6, against Arina Oreshchenkova of Texas Tech.
Freshman Jillian Harkin was the last Wildcat one courts, battling in another high scoring match against Bitsy Tullis from BYU, but could not collect the win, losing 7-5, 6-4.
Suarez and Ukita secured the only doubles victory for K-State, defeating the Red Raider's Oreshchenkova and Stepp of, 7-5. This was the first time they have competed together in doubles since Oct. 14, during the ITA Central Regional. Kulhava and Polakova saw a similar score, 7-5, but came up short against BYU's Yujia Huang and Kaavya Sawhney.
The two remaining doubles teams saw a switch in partners, Keitel and Santos and Harkin and Quamar competing together for the first time. Keitel and Santos could not keep up against Heike Jans Van Vuuren and Gracie Mulville from Kansas, losing 6-2. Harkin and Quamar saw a similar score against UCF's Jantje Tilbuerger and Noel Saidenova.
Day three of the tournament will start on Saturday (Nov. 11) at 9 a.m. CT with doubles matches before four women—Suarez, Keitel, Quamar and Santos-- compete in semifinal matches. The four remaining women will compete in a consolation match.
