Hawkeyes Top Wildcats in Round Rock Finale Thriller, 6-5
Feb 26, 2023 | Baseball
ROUND ROCK, Texas – K-State fought its way back from a 4-0 deficit but fell short as the Wildcats dropped their final game of the Round Rock Classic to Iowa, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes improved to 5-1 while the Cats move to 4-4 overall.
"Obviously another disappointing loss," said Pete Hughes. "If you're not going to score 10 runs, then there leaves no margin for error, and we did that in the first inning."
"I thought Fajardo was very good. We didn't play good defense, but I thought he kept his composure and minimized the damage."
The Wildcats evened the score at 4-all in the fourth until freshman Carson Queck tripled into left center before coming around on a sac fly to give K-State the lead but two unanswered runs gave the Hawkeyes their second straight victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Iowa jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning after taking advantage of a fielding error at first until the Hawkeyes doubled their lead in the second.
With two outs, Queck walked in his first collegiate start before moving up two bases with Brady Day's double down the left field line but Marcus Morgan's fourth strikeout of the matchup ended the rally.
The Hawkeyes tagged two additional runs to the board in the top of the third with a two-run RBI single by Kyle Huckstorf to extend the lead out to four.
K-State responded in the second half of the inning after capitalizing on a wild pitch from Morgan to end the shutout and bring the score within three, 4-1. Brendan Jones hit through the 5-6 hole to reach first until the sophomore stole his fifth base of the season to move into scoring position. Dom Hughes grounded out to second for Jones to advance to third before he crossed the plate on a ball to the back stop.
The Cats broke through in the fourth inning collecting three runs on two hits and an error. Two straight walks positioned runners on first and second before Day recorded his second hit of the day to load the bases. Raphael Pelletier, who was 0-for-6 on the weekend, registered a game-changing hit that plated two runs. After falling behind 0-2, the catcher roped a single through the right side of the field to drive in Lodice and Queck.
K-State leveled the score, 4-4, just two batters later as Cole Johnson attempted to steal second to draw the throw down from behind the plate allowing Day to touch home on the play.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Queck recorded the first triple of the season in the sixth with a shot off the left center fence until coming home on a sac fly into center to give the Cats just their second lead of the weekend.
Iowa scored on a passed ball to quickly even the score at 5-all before the Keaton Anthony's solo home run in the ninth gave the Hawkeyes the go ahead-run.
Iowa reliever Zach Voelker earned the victory on the mound after entering the competition in the fourth allowing one earned run with five strikeouts. Tyson Neighbors received the loss after allowing the final home run
