Third Inning Surge Leads K-State to Series Sweep
Mar 12, 2023 | Baseball
"Today was a strong finish to a really solid weekend," head coach Pete Hughes said. "I was very proud of our guys and how they approached the early start with energy and urgency from start to finish."
"I thought Mason Buss did a great job coming in to pick up his teammate."
Buss, a freshman from Pewaukee, Wis., was awarded his collegiate victory on the hump after tossing two complete innings with one unearned run on one hit to go along with a season-high three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Raphael Pelletier led off the second for the Cats with his second home run of the season. The Quebec, Canada product launched a solo homer over the right the right field fence to bring the Wildcats' season total to 26.
The Wildcats held the Penguins in the top of the third before taking control of the game in the bottom half of the inning as K-State plated 10 runs on three hits with two errors from YSU.
With bases loaded, Brady Day singled into left center to double the Cats lead to bring Cole Johnson to the plate. The senior from Southlake, Texas found the left center gap for a three-run double to make it 5-0 until he came around on a grounder in the infield.
K-State entered double figure scoring for the second time in the series as the Wildcats took advantage of two consecutive fielding errors to tab five additional runs to the board.
The Penguins challenged the Wildcats defense in the top of the fourth after loading the bases with no outs but Buss struck out two straight batters before forcing a fly out to end the threat.
Cash Rugely and Nick Goodwin recorded back-to-back singles to extend the Cats lead out to 13 until YSU took advantage of a throwing error to snap the shutout in the fifth.
The Cats ended scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs, securing the run-rule victory and series sweep.
