Cats Dampen Sooners Spirits on Friday Night

Mar 24, 2023 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State adjusted to the elements and overcame a steady amount of rainfall to cruise past Oklahoma, 7-1, on Friday night at Tointon Family Stadium.

Owen Boerema and Ty Ruhl limited the Sooners (13-9) to just six hits to lead the Wildcats (15-8) to their second Big 12 victory of the season in the series opener.

"That was a really sound team effort," head coach Pete Hughes said. "It begins with a great start, and we had that with Owen [Boerema]. Error free baseball in uncomfortable conditions was awesome."

Boerema, a left-hander from Litchfield, Minn., tossed six complete innings on his way to collect his fourth straight victory on the hump. He allowed just one earned run on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks while Ruhl registered his second save of the year.

"We had some big hits by Brady Day, Nick Goodwin, and Cash Rugely that helped us build a lead. That doesn't happen without four walks from Dom Hughes. Great plate discipline gives us chances to score and get into our opponents bullpen."

The trio combined for six of the Wildcats seven hits to lead the offense in the victory with Day and Johnson each going 2-for-3 at the plate. Day drove in a pair of runs for his seventh multiple-RBI game of his career while Goodwin reached base for the 15th straight game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After two scoreless innings, K-State plated two runs in the third frame with Day's two-out RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. Roberto Pena and Hughes each walked before advancing 90-feet on a deep fly ball to right from Goodwin. With two outs, Day laced a 2-2 pitch into opposite field avoiding the efforts of the Sooners second basemen to drive in the runners.

OU jumped on the board in the fifth after Kendall Pettis reached on a fielder's choice before coming around on a single through the left side by Anthony Mackenzie to make it a one-run ball game.

The Cats sent nine batters to the plate to take control of the game in the bottom of the inning scoring five runs on two hits, four walks and a wild pitch. OU walked two straight batters to bring Goodwin to the plate as the Overland Park, Kan., product punched a single into center field to drive in a run.

With bases loaded and no outs, Cole Johnson walked to push the Cats lead out to three, 4-1. K-State added a pair of runs to the board before the Sooners called their fourth mound visit to make the second pitching change of the inning. OU reliever Braden Carmichael spiked a ball into the turf for the Cats to plate their final run.

K-State set down six straight batters with reliever Ty Ruhl striking out a pair of Sooners in the eighth. OU landed its first base runner since the sixth inning but a hard grounder back to the mound ended the rally to secure the win.
