Wildcats Open Season with Three First Place Finishes
Mar 06, 2023 | Rowing
The team competes again on March 18 -19 in Sacramento, Calif.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's rowing team wrapped up a successful weekend of competition with two sets of races on Saturday (March 4) against Oklahoma, Central Oklahoma and Tulsa at the Chesapeake Boathouse. The team then scrimmaged with OU on Sunday (March 5).
"This weekend was a good learning experience for our young team. It was the first time on the water since our winter camp, and we raced against strong programs who have consistent water time," head coach Pat Sweeney said. "The team competed well on Saturday in two 2k races."
Saturday was highlighted by three first place finishes and two second place finishes across all events. The Wildcats also had 5 third place finishes.
The 1v4+ consisting of coxswain senior Kaitlyn Henke, sophomore Neva Roenne, junior Jadyn Greisen and sophomores Emily Stark and Halle Fee, won their races in the AM and the PM session, with times of 7:40.6 and 7:54.9.
"I am excited for this upcoming season, to see what this boat and the team as a whole, has in store for us," Henke said. "We have worked incredibly hard over the winter months, and I am ready to see how we can improve our rowing with more water time in each of our boats. The 1v4+ has been a solid group, and now we have building blocks to work from. Overall, a great weekend to see where we stand. Now it's time to go to work."
The 2v4+ secured the teams third first place finish of the day during the PM session of racing with a time of 8:06.4. The lineup consisted of coxswain freshman Kiersten Schmalz, juniors Lindsey DeVreugd and Alyssa Buettner and sophomores Kendra Hamman and Catie Wood. The boat came in second during the morning session of races with a time of 7:58.2.
"I think our success yesterday gave us a lot of confidence in the season," Buettner said. "With the start of every new season, there is always uncertainty about how we will perform since we go so long without on water practice. It's really reassuring that we were able to start off so strong and it gave us a strong foundation to build off of for the rest of the season."
The novice 8+ consisting of freshmen, coxswain Kennedy Loyd, Makenzie Storm, Kyla Traub, Zoey Whorton, Emma Johnson, Ava Werner, junior McKenna Johnson, and freshmen Tatum Alexander and Ellie Erwin, finished the day with a second-place finish in the first set of races and a third-place finish in the second. Final times were 7:33.83 and 7:51.7.
The 1v8+ came in third during the morning and afternoon sessions, running a lineup of coxswain sophomore Paige Fox, senior Madison Jensen, sophomores Jordan Girkin, Rachel Harman, Madison Koller, Madelyn Barrett, Symone Simmons and juniors Idallis Shaffer and Patricia Hokanson. Finish times were 7:18.5 and 7:23.5, respectively.
The 2v8+ consisting of coxswain junior Lauren Plum, sophomore Gracyn McClain, freshmen Sylvia Cunningham and Grace Hall, sophomore Anna Ryan, freshman Kay Pakkebier, sophomores Grace Hendrickson and Jayden Brandt and junior Kaylee Kleinschmit, came in third with a time 7:19.6. The afternoon lineup shifted to coxswain Plum, McClain, Kleinschmit, Hall, Ryan, Hendrickson, Cunningham, Brandt, and Pakkebier, also finishing in third with a time of 7:26.4.
"The races yesterday were strong and set everyone up with a good base for the rest of the season," Fee said.
The weekend continued with a scrimmage on Sunday, hosted by the Sooners at the Oklahoma Boathouse. The scrimmage was a series of timed pieces focused on lower rates with power production.
"[Sunday] was a bit of a struggle with the wind and rough water conditions. We're a young team with less mileage as a unit so I think more practice together will make us stronger for any racing conditions," Fee said.
The weekend was an opportunity for the team to see months of preseason work put into practice.
"Sundays' work with OU had some strong winds but gave us as coaches some good feedback on what is needed going forward," Sweeney said.
The Wildcats will compete next in Sarasota, Calif. in the Hornet Invitational on Saturday March 18 and Sunday March 19.
"We want to thank UCO and OU for hosting us, it was a great weekend for us to gain more experience and get some work done," Sweeney said. "The strength and fitness of our team is good, but now we need to produce more boat speed, and that comes with more time in the boats. Our next step, for the entire team, is pairing the strength and endurance we have built with technique."
