K-State Captures Third at Tiger Collegiate Invitational

Apr 11, 2023 | Men's Golf

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The 25th-ranked Kansas State men's golf team claimed its eighth top-five finish of the season as the Wildcats finished in third place after Tuesday's final round of the Tiger Collegiate Invitational held at the par-72, 7,221-yard Club at Old Hawthorne.

The 2022-23 Wildcats are now tied for second place in school history in top-five finishes with seven of those being third place or better. K-State shot a 14-under par 274 on Tuesday - the second-lowest score in the field - to conclude the event with a 54-hole score of 36-under par 828, tied for the lowest team tournament score this season and the fifth lowest in school history.

"I'm really proud of how we competed this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We got off to a slow start but were able to play pretty golf for the final 27 holes. The conditions were perfect for scoring, and it came down to if you could get hot enough with the putter."

The Wildcats were led by senior Tim Tillmanns with a three-round score of 16-under par 200, which is the fourth-lowest individual tournament score in school history. Earlier this season, Tillmanns tied the school record with a 12-under par 198 during The Johnnie-O.

A product of Cologne, Germany, Tillmanns shot a bogey-free final round of 7-under par 65 on Tuesday, which included an eagle on the par-5 10th hole. He finished in the top five for a second time this season and fourth time as a Wildcat.

Three other Wildcats finished in the top 10 in Luke O'Neill, Will Hopkins and Cooper Schultz. Competing as an individual, O'Neill carded a 3-under par 69 on Tuesday to finish the tournament at 11-under par 205, capturing his first top-10 performance of the year and second of his career.

Hopkins, a senior from Lincolnshire, England, moved five spots up the leaderboard into a tie for eighth place during the final round thanks to a 4-under par 68 on Tuesday. His 54-hole tally of 10-under par 206 tied his career best as he claimed the 11th top-10 finish of his career to tie for ninth in school history.

Schultz tied for 10th place at 9-under par 207 following a 1-under par 71 final round. It was his third career top-10 finish, including his second this season.

"Tim and Will were rock solid all week, and I am really proud of Luke with how he responded playing as an individual," Robbins said.

Nicklaus Mason carded a 2-under par 70 on Tuesday - his best round of the event - to move nine spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 36th place at 1-under par 215. Laurenz Schiergen ended the event tied for 57th at 5-over par 223.

Fifth-ranked Illinois ran away with the team championship at 68-under par 796, 28 strokes ahead of second place and host school Missouri at 40-under par 824. Jackson Buchanan of Illinois won the individual title with a score of 22-under par 194.

Kansas State will next head to the 2023 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship, April 24-26, held at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.

"I'm looking forward to a couple weeks of good practice and trying to make a run at Big 12's," said Robbins.
