‘Eaters Top Cats in Series Finale Sunday
Apr 23, 2023 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. – K-State was held to one run for just the third time this season as UC Irvine claimed the series finale, 7-1, at Anteater Ballpark on Sunday.
The Wildcats (26-16) won the series against the Anteaters for their fourth three-game series win of the season and second consecutive after sweeping past rival Kansas last weekend. With major moves in the Big 12 over the weekend, the Cats now stand third overall in the league standings.
"We had opportunities to have a couple of big innings and were unable to make it happen," said head coach Pete Hughes. "Eleven left on base is a lot. We've been very good lately with runners in scoring position. Unfortunately, we were not successful today."
"In the end we did what we came here to do, and that's win the series," said Hughes.
Collin Rothermel (1-2) received the loss after allowing six runs (six earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Brady Day and Nick Goodwin each produced multiple hits with Day going 3-for-4 at the plate while Goodwin had two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Momentum shifted in favor of the 'Eaters in the final game of the three-game set as UCI grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the second frame and kept the foot on the gas.
Three homers separated the Cats and 'Eaters who expanded their lead out to six, 6-0, leading into the seventh.
Kaelen Culpepper reached on a walk before advancing 90-feet on a single from Carson Queck until another walk loaded the bases. With no outs, Raphael Pelletier hit to the right side to bring home Culpepper and snap the shutout but the 'Eaters collected three quick outs to end the threat.

The Cats close out their west coast trip with a single game against UC Riverside (8-28, 2-13 Big West) on Tuesday night at Riverside Sports Complex with game time slated for 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and the ESPN app with radio coverage on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM).
