Boerema Punches Out 12, Cats Come Up Short on Friday

Apr 07, 2023 | Baseball

AUSTIN, Texas – Owen Boerema fanned 12 Longhorns on Friday night as No. 21 Texas turned a four-run deficit into a one-run lead to grab the 6-5 decision at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

"We did a lot of really good things tonight that are challenging to do on the road," head coach Pete Hughes said.

Boerema, a native from Litchfield, Minn., became the first Wildcat this season to strikeout 10-plus batters in a single game. The senior is now one-of-five pitchers from the Big 12 to register 12 strikeouts in a single outing this year.

"We got a great start on a Friday night, scored early, and built a lead, but we didn't finish the game. It was disappointing," said Hughes.

"It'll be a quick turnaround for tomorrow's game and although tonight's loss was heartbreaking, we have to flush it and be ready for tomorrow. We can't let this loss beat us twice."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Texas jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning with Porter Brown's RBI single into right field.

The Wildcats immediately responded with a pair of runs after capitalizing on a walk and hit by pitch in the second. Kaelen Culpepper recorded the first hit of the night as the sophomore singled into right before advancing to second after Raphael Pelletier was hit by a pitch.

With two outs, the Longhorns walked two straight batters to level the score before Brady Day was hit to take the 2-1 lead.

The Cats extended their lead out to four, 5-1, after executing two sacrifice bunts in the top of the seventh frame. With runners on first and second, Cash Rugely laid down the bunt to bring Dom Hughes across the plate.

Cole Johnson dropped the second sac bunt that allowed Brendan Jones to easily come home before Rugely dove head first avoiding the play at the plate to score the fifth run.

Texas' pinch hitter Tanner Carlson hit into right to land on base but was left stranded as the Cats picked up two quick outs before Boerema punched out his 12th batter to preserve the lead.

The Longhorns retired the Cats in order in the eighth before stringing together five consecutive hits to grab the one-run lead, 6-5.
