The last two home matches of the season start on Friday April 14 at 5 p.m. against Oklahoma

MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team lost a close battle to No. 21 Kansas, 4-3, in the Sunflower Showdown on Saturday (April 8) at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.

K-State (2-17, 0-7 Big 12) won three straight singles matches over Kansas (14-4, 4-3 Big 12) to tie the match at 3-all, but junior Manami Ukita was unable to complete the comeback, falling to Carmen Roxana Manu, 6-3, 0-6, 5-7.

Junior Aleen Quamar earned the first point for the Wildcats, defeating Silvia Costache 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 4 position. It was her second win at the No. 4 spot since Feb. 19 when she defeated Sydney Pratt of Northwestern.

The second win came at the No. 2 position, as freshman Vanesa Suarez defeated Maria Titova 6-4, 6-1. It was her first win in the No. 2 spot and first since a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory against No. 101 ranked Sabina Zeynalova of Texas on March 17.

Freshman Rozalia Gruszczynska made it three in a row for the Wildcats with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Tamari Gagoshidze in the No. 5 spot. It was her second consecutive win since defeating Arina Oreshchenkova of Texas Tech 6-3, 6-3 on March 26.

Ukita split the first and second set against Manu, winning the first 6-3, before dropping the second and third set 6-0, 7-5, that clinched the match for the Jayhawks.

Kansas jumped out to a 3-0 lead after winning the doubles point and earning victories at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions. Sophomore Florentine Dekkers was defeated in the No. 1 spot by No. 59 ranked Malkia Ngounoue, 6-2, 6-3, while K-State was forced to forfeit the No. 6 position due to injury.

The short-handed Wildcats fought during doubles matches, as Suarez and Ukita battled against No. 47 ranked team of Malkia Ngounoue and Heike Jans Van Vuuren at No. 1 doubles, but the match was left unfinished 4-5 as Dekkers and Gruszczynska were defeated by Maria Titova and Tamari Gagoshidze, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

The Wildcats will wrap up the regular season with a pair of home matches, first against No. 18 Oklahoma (16-8, 6-1 Big 12) at 5 p.m., CT on Friday (April 14) and No. 19 Oklahoma State (12-6, 5-2 Big 12) at 12 p.m., CT on Sunday (April 16). Both will be played at the Mike Goss Tennis Satdium.

FROM THE COURT
HEAD COACH JORDAN SMITH
On battling back while being down…
"I think it went amazing considering we started down 1-0 not having enough players, just because not enough personnel at the moment. So for the girls to come back in doubles knowing that disadvantage but find a way to create an advantage. We battled in number one, played very close in number two doubles, so that was really good to see from the four girls in doubles. In singles I thought we did an amazing job. You know, it could have easily had our head down being down 2-0 going into the singles point, instead and we made it known that this was a home match for K-State and not KU and I think that's a lot of credit to the fans that were here today.

On the performances in singles matches…
"There's a lot of credit to the girls that they were fighting, that was a top 25 team but we're right there every step of the way. I think we just did really amazing from all of our six ladies out there today, the five that played and Maria [Santos] who's there supporting them every step of the way. So, you know, we left it all on line, that's one thing we always coach them, don't have any regrets, be able to give your 100% and know that you did everything you could and Manami did that. So really proud of her even though she came up short there, she should be really proud of what she did and how she was able to make herself and all the teammates proud."
