Tamaiah Koonce finishes 4th in the women's discus

Nine Podium Finishes for Wildcats to Conclude Big 12 Championship

Qualifying athletes will compete in the NCAA West Preliminary starting May 24

NORMAN, Okla. – Seven Wildcats and both relay teams medaled for the K-State men's and women's track and field teams on Sunday (May 14) on the third and final day of the Big 12 Championship in Norman, Okla., at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex.
 
After 21 events, K-State's women finished in seventh place with 48 points, while the men placed eighth with 39 points. The Texas women won the Big 12 Championship with 197 points, outdistancing host Oklahoma. The Texas Tech men earned the men's title with 179 points over second-place Texas.
 
Two duos reached the podium, including senior Stephen Kielhofner and junior Hadley Splechter in the men's 1,500 meters, and senior Shalysa Wray and junior O'Shalia Johnson in the women's 400 meter dash.
 
Other Wildcats with medal-worthy performances included freshman Tamaiah Koonce in the women's discus, junior Devon Richardson in the men's triple jump, junior Nicolas-Jean Moulin in the men's 400 meter hurdles and the men's and women's 4x400 meter relay teams.
 
Koonce had the highest finish of the day in her Big 12 debut with a fourth-place finish in the discus throw of 51.71m/169-8.
 
Kielhofner and Splechter started the day off with the first two medals in the 1,500 meters, as Kielhofner finished fifth in 3:43.90, while Splechter came in seventh at 3:45.88.
 
In the 400 meter dash, Wray and Johnson finished in sixth and eighth places, respectively, as Wray posted a time of 53.21 seconds while Johnson came in 53.69.
 
In the triple jump, Richardson finished seventh with a distance of 15.07m/49-5.50. In his season best, Moulin claimed eighth place in the 400 meter hurdles in 53.13 seconds.
 
The women's relay, consisting of Wray, O. Johnson, freshman Twaneise Johnson and freshman Ludivine Aubert, finished with a time of 3:38.33 in eighth place.
 
The men's relay team finished in sixth, as the quartet of junior Kyle Gale, sophomore Darian Clarke, junior Tim Lambert and Moulin, ran a time of 3:10.34.
 
Three more Wildcats placed in the final day of competition, as freshman Jhavor Bennett posted a mark of 14.68m/48-2 to finish 11th in the men's triple jump, while junior Shalom Olotu was 12th in the women's triple jump with a leap of 12.24m/40-2. Sophomore Matthew Hauser ran in the men's 5,000 meters, finishing 18th with a time of 15:04.34, out of 26 competitors.
 
Athletes chosen to compete in the NCAA West Preliminary first round will start competition Wednesday, May 24, in Sacramento, Calif., at the Hornet Stadium hosted by Sacramento State.
