Jul 13, 2023 | Volleyball
LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the 13th consecutive year, K-State volleyball was presented with the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2022-23 academic year, the organizations announced Thursday.
The honor, which is given to programs with a team grade-point average of 3.30 or higher during the academic year, is the 21st in K-State volleyball history. The streak of 13 straight awards extends the longest such stretch in program history, six years longer than its next-best streak of seven straight awards from 2001-02 through 2007-08.
The team award caps another strong academic year for the Wildcats. In total, five Cats were selected to the Academic All-Big 12 Teams with four earning First Team honors. K-State boasted a 3.392 team GPA during the 2022-23 academic year. Middle blocker Kadye Fernholz, setter Loren Hinkle and libero Mackenzie Morris each turned in a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring semester.
Additionally, Morris racked up multiple academic honors following her junior campaign as she became the second player in program history to receive Big 12 Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year honors. The Dallas, Texas, product collected her third Academic All-Big 12 First Team accolade and earned a spot on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
The USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award was initiated in 1992-93 and honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year. This year, more than 1,300 teams earned the award.
Eight of 13 teams in the Big 12 received the 2022-23 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award.
Head coach Jason Mansfield enters his first season at the helm of Wildcat volleyball with 11 players returning from last season's squad including preseason All-Big 12 picks Sydney Bolding and Aliyah Carter.
