Wildcats Open Season at Creighton Fall Duel

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's rowing team opened the fall season racing at the Creighton Fall Duel on Saturday (Sept. 16) at Carter Lake in Omaha, Nebraska.

"The team performed well this weekend. Heading into the race, we built even lineups that have been able to push each other in training," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "This was a good way to see the progress we have made and help us plan our next steps."

Saturday's competition featured two events, with races being set up in a head race style. Competition started with the Varsity 4+s, where the Wildcats had five boats competing. K-State A (12:09.4), K-State B (12:36.2) and K-State D (12:38.3) finished second, third and fourth respectively. K-State E (13:03.9) and K-State C (13:04.4) finished sixth and seventh in the event.

"Each race was an opportunity for our athletes to get a good, strong workout. We look at fall races as a chance to gain experience, while continuing to push our training," Sweeney said. "This is where we are building the foundation for the strength and endurance that we need to be competitive during the spring."

K-State raced three varsity 8+ boats, also claiming second, third and fourth place with K-State C (11:01.7), K-State B (11:04.8) and K-State A (11:02.3).

"We would like to thank Coach Dan Chipps and his staff for hosting us this weekend. We appreciate being able to compete this early in the season and we're looking forward to the rest of the year," Sweeney said.

The Wildcats will race again in November in the annual Jayhawk Jamboree against Kansas at Burcham Park in Lawrence, Kan., on Saturday (Nov. 4).
