Wildcats Finish 11th in Season Opener

NORMAN, Okla. – The Kansas State women's golf team was unable to continue its momentum from an under-par second round, as the Wildcats carded a 14-over par 294 during the final round of the Schooner Fall Classic on Monday at the par-70, 6,182-yard Belmar Golf Club.
The Wildcats, who began the day in a tie for fifth, fell to 11th place with a final 54-hole score of 16-over par 856.
"We missed a big opportunity today with our poor play," head coach Stew Burke said. "Ultimately, the team is learning and has to be in position to close more often. The positives outweigh the negatives in terms of performance and progress we're making, but at this level mistakes are highlighted. It's on me to prepare the ladies better for our next event."
One bright spot during the final 18 was a 1-under par 69 turned in by junior Carla Bernat, her first under-par round as a Wildcat. The Tulane transfer put together a fairly clean scorecard with two birdies and one bogey on the day, and she parred every hole on the back nine.
Bernat showed improvement throughout the event, carding a 74 on Saturday and a 71 on Sunday before the under-par final round. She finished in a tie for 34th place at 4-over par 214.
The top Wildcat finisher was freshman Alenka Navarro in a tie for 22nd place at 1-over par 211 following a round of 3-over par 73 on Monday.
Seniors Haley Vargas and Gabriela McNelly tied for 58th and 61st, respectively. Vargas turned in a 4-over par 74 during the final round for a three-round total of 8-over par 218, one shot ahead of McNelly, who was unable to capitalize on her career-low round of 68 on Sunday.
Freshman Julia Ballester Barrio tied for 71st place at 15-over par 225 in her first collegiate tournament.
Wake Forest, the defending national champion, ran away with the team title at 29-under par 811, 22 shots ahead of second-place Virginia Tech. Morgan Ketchum of Virginia Tech was the top individual finisher at 9-under par 201
Kansas State will travel home and regroup prior to hosting the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, next Monday and Tuesday, at Colbert Hills.
