MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Columbia, Mo., for the Gans Creek Classic on Friday (Sept. 29) at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course hosted by Missouri.
The men will run in the 8k at 9 a.m., CT with the women running in the first 6k of the season at 9:45 a.m., CT. Other participating teams include USTFCCCA nationally-ranked Colorado, Midwest Region ranked Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska and Wichita State, along with Baylor, Creighton, Mississippi State, Texas Tech and Lindenwood, where head coach Randy Cole previously spent 10 years at the helm.
During the last meet at the John McNichols Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., on Sept. 16, the women's team finished third with 70 points highlighted by senior Hannah Stewart landing in the top-three with a third-place time of 17:29.4. The men's team finished eighth with 198 points, led by junior Tommy Hazen who finished 28th in a time of 27:47.4.
A pair of newcomers also performed well in Terre Haute. Freshman Josephine Wanjiku started off strong in her first meet, leading the women's 5k through the first couple miles before placing 12th in 17:47.1. Freshman Jacob Norris jumped right into his first race in the 8k, finishing sixth for the men's team with a time of 25:28.1 and 67th overall.
Last season, the Wildcats ran the Gans Creek Course in Columbia during the NCAA Midwest Regional, while the last time they participated in the Gans Creek Classic was 2021, when the men finished eighth with 181 points and the women placed fifth with 176 points.
"The Gans Creek meet will be really, really good to see teams from several regions, on a championship style course," Cole said.
In the USTFCCCA rankings released on Monday (Sept. 25), the K-State women's team sits at 10th in the Midwest Region.
