Multiple Personal Bests Achieved in Day Two at Texas Tech

K-State will rest before hosting the first two meets of the season starting on Thursday, Feb. 1
LUBBOCK, Texas – The K-State track and field teams finished competition with multiple personal bests during the Texas Tech Corky Classic on Saturday (Jan. 20) at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas.

Eleven Wildcats recorded new personal bests with eight more 'Cats finishing top-5 in their event.

Freshman Isaac Ativie improved on his farthest long jump by five inches at 6.80m/22-3.75 in 8th place. Also, with top-10 marks in the field events were senior Shalom Olotu (3rd; 6.16m/20-2.50) in women's long jump and three women in the shot put-- juniors Daisy Monie (3rd; 15.61m/51-2.75) and Grace Thompson (5th; 15.25m/50-0.50) and senior Jaycee Schroeder (7th; 14.90m/48-10.75).

Sprinters in the 60 meter hurdles shaved some time off including sophomore Jourdin Edwards (9th; 8.46) leading the pack, just one-tenth of a second away from qualifying for the next round. Other performances came from junior Vanessa Mercera (20th; 8.76), senior Urte Bacianskaite (21st; 8.79) and sophomore Delaney Wright (23rd; 9.03).

Six distance runners ran their fastest mile, most notably freshman Josphine Wanjiku in 2nd place in 4:49.47, junior Matthew Hauser for the men also finished runner up with a time of 4:13.57. Faster times in the mile also came from sophomores Grace Meyer (7th; 4:59.78) and Cecilia Fisher (8th; 4:59.99), junior Tommy Hazen (4th; 4:14.31) and senior Kerby Depenbusch (7th; 4:23.32).

Hauser competed in one other event, the 3000 meters, with a 3rd place time of 8:49.73. Other top-5 times came from junior Will Carroll (5th; 1:53.26) in the 800 meters, senior Kyle Johnston (5th; 2:30.1) in the 1000 meters and senior Hannah Stewart (5th; 4:56.76) in the mile.

Other sprinters with quicker times came from sophomore Twaneise Johnson (7th; 24.74) in the 200 meters, who finished top-10 in the B section field of 19 runners. And in just her second meet, freshman Mikah Scott (33rd; 7.72) in the 60 meter dash.

One K-State relay team-- consisting of seniors Eugene Omalla, Kyle Gale, Jaimie Omalla and freshman Tavon Underwood-- finished runner-up with a time of 3:05.72.

K-State will rest next weekend before hosting the first two meets at the new indoor facility with the Austra Skujyte Women's Heptathlon / Steve Fritz Heptathlon on Thursday (Feb. 1) and the DeLoss Dodds Invitational starting on Friday (Feb. 2).
