K-State Closes Fall Schedule at Rainbow Wahine Invitational

Oct 18, 2024 | Women's Golf

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's golf team, ranked No. 28 in the first edition of the National Collegiate Golf Rankings, will close out its fall schedule in style as the Wildcats compete in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Monday through Wednesday, at the par-72, 6,231-yard Kapolei Golf Club in Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i.

This will be the third time in school history the Wildcats will compete in The Aloha State as they finished seventh in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in both 2006 and 2009.

"We are looking forward to getting back in action in Hawai'i," head coach Stew Burke said. "The ladies had a good week at home preparing for the upcoming tournament. With this being the last event of the fall, they are determined to finish off what has been a good season up to this point with a stellar performance. As a team, we played some good golf in spells, but we haven't really put it all together for a full tournament as of yet. There would be no place better and no better time to put three good rounds together and see where we end up at the end of this event and the fall season."

K-State is part of a 15-team field that includes host-school Hawai'i, Austin Peay, Colorado State, Eastern Michigan, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, Nevada, North Dakota State, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, UC Irvine, Utah Tech and Wyoming. Additionally, a team from Osaka Gakuin, a university in Suita, Japan, will also compete in the event.

The Wildcats earned a No. 28 ranking in the first edition of the National Collegiate Golf Rankings released on Wednesday. K-State was one of nine Big 12 teams ranked in the top 31, joining No. 4 Arizona State, No. 8 Arizona, No. 23 TCU, No. 24 Baylor, No. 26 Houston, No. 29 Kansas, No. 30 Oklahoma State and No. 31 Iowa State.

The Wildcats will send the same five members of the scoring lineup as the first four events this season in seniors Carla Bernat and Sophie Bert, junior Noa van Beek, sophomore Alenka Navarro and freshman Nanami Nakashima.

Kansas State has been led this season by Bernat, who is currently ranked No. 25 nationally and third among Big 12 players in the initial National Collegiate Golf Rankings. A native of Castellon, Spain, Bernat holds a 70.64 scoring average with three top-10 finishes. She opened the fall slate with a victory at the Powercat Invitational at 3-under par 208, while she tied for fourth place at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational at even-par 216 and tied for 10th place at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at 3-under par 213.

Navarro ranks second on the team with a 73.55 scoring average with her best finish of the year being a tie for third place at the Powercat Invitational. Bert ranks third on the squad with a 74.18 scoring average but is tied with Bernat with three top-10 showings. The East Tennessee State transfer opened the year by tying for seventh place at the Powercat Invitational and tying for eighth place at the Schooner Fall Classic, while she is coming off a 10th-place tie at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate.

Shotgun starts at 9 a.m. HT (2 p.m. CT) begin play each day. Live results of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational are available on SCOREBOARD Powered by Clippd.
