Carter’s Career Day Highlights Cats’ Five-Set Victory

Oct 27, 2024 | Volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan. –  In a match that featured 55 tie scores, 15 lead changes and 32 kills from Aliyah Carter, K-State was able to outlast Iowa State in five sets (25-21, 24-26, 25-23, 23-25, 22-20) Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum and complete the season series sweep.

After calling its second timeout of the fifth and final set, K-State (7-11, 5-4 Big 12) rallied to fend off match-point five times before taking the reins with Carter's 32nd kill and stretch its winning streak to six over ISU.

A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Carter joined an elite group of Wildcat greats as she became the first player since September 12, 2011, to tally 30 or more kills in a match (Kaitlynn Pelger, 32 v. Drake).  The outside hitter is one of only seven players in school history to produce a 30-kill match, while her 87 attacks shattered a five-set match program record in the rally-scoring era.

Carter totaled a career-high 36.0 points – fourth-most all-time in K-State history – and finished the day with nine digs and a match-leading three service aces. This season, Carter has generated 10 or more kills in all but two matches, totaling 99 in her career.

K-State collected a season-high 77 kills and hit .221, as senior setter Izzi Szulczewski handed out a career-high 56 assists. Szulczewski added 14 digs to turn in her team-leading ninth double-double. She is the sixth player in the Big 12 to dish out 56 or more assists in a match this season.

The Cats held an 89-85 edge in dig production, led by 21 from senior libero Ella Larkin with Symone Sims following with a career-high 17.

Two additional Wildcats reached double-figure kills with Shaylee Myers (13) and Meg Brown (12), who totaled a match-high seven blocks (2 solo, 5 assists).

Lilly Wachholz and Faith DeRonde combined for 33 of the Cyclones (9-9, 3-4 Big 12) 69 kills, while Wachholz hit at a match-high .484 efficiency. ISU out-blocked the Cats, 13.0-11.0, that included four total blocks in the third set alone.

The Cats' six-match win streak against the Cyclones is the second longest in the all-time series.

Now with 1,684 career kills, Carter is one of 12 active Division I players to reach the milestone. She is also one of only four players in the Big 12 to achieve a 30-kill match this season.

Carter's 87 swings marks just the fourth time overall in K-State history a player recorded 87 or more attacks in a match. Carter, alongside K-State Hall of Famers Dawn Cady (1996-99) and Liz Wegner (1998-2001), are the only players in program history to post 87 or more attacks in a match. Cady owns the record with 93 at Nebraska in 1999.

K-State returns to the Little Apple Thursday night, as the Wildcats close the season series with West Virginia (8-12, 2-7 Big 12) at Morgan Family Arena. Thursday's match can be seen on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.

Tickets are available for all K-State home matches through the K-State Athletics ticket office at 1-800-221-CATS and www.kstatesports.com/tickets, starting at just $10 when purchased in advance.

FROM THE CATS
Jason Mansfield, K-State Head Coach
Overall thoughts on the victory:
"We're finding different ways to win five-set matches, and I love it. This was such a gritty win by our Cats, the kind that builds real, earned confidence. Molly [Ramsey] did an excellent job keeping our serve receive solid. Symone [Sims] also excelled in serve receive, making unbelievable defensive plays. Ella [Larkin] was steady as always and has truly settled in as one of the best liberos in our conference. Offensively, we kept their blockers guessing, thanks to big swings from Shaylee Myers, Meg Brown, and Aniya Clinton. Brenna [Schmidt] and Izzi [Szulczewski] did a fantastic job of locating when we needed it most in those late sets."

On Aliyah Carter's historic day:
"Aliyah flipped a switch this week after Liz [Gregorski] got hurt at KU, and she played like the dominant player she can be in both matches this week. But today was truly special. As a kid from Iowa, playing here for the last time in front of so many family and friends, this is a match she'll never forget."
