K-State Travels to Texas for Big 12 Match Play
Oct 06, 2024 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team will get a preview of its conference counterparts while competing in a different format as the Wildcats take part in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, Monday through Wednesday, at the par-71, 7,007-yard Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas.
This will be the sixth time in the last seven years the Wildcats will compete in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament as there was no event in 2020. K-State's best finish was a tie for third place in 2019.
"The Big 12 Match Play is a fantastic event and one we look forward to each year," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Obviously the match play format is different from what we play in all season, but it is one that the players really enjoy. It gives us a chance to go head to head against some great teams on a golf course where you can make a lot of birdies. Match play is all about momentum, so it's important that we stay aggressive, play smart and stay focused on what we can control. We have a lot of depth on our team, and I'm really looking forward to seeing us compete."
K-State, the No. 10 seed for Big 12 Match Play, is in Pool B with No. 2-seed Oklahoma State, seventh-seeded Kansas and No. 15-seed UCF. The Wildcats begin the event by taking on Kansas on Monday morning and Oklahoma State on Monday afternoon before finishing pool play against UCF on Tuesday morning.
Tuesday afternoon sees the Wildcats face their equal finisher in Pool C before a championship flight of matches on Wednesday morning.
The Wildcats will send six members of the team to Hockley in seniors Nicklaus Mason, Cooper Schultz, Kobe Valociek and Ian McCrary in addition to freshmen Fionn Dobbin and Erik Sabelstrom Holmberg.
Schultz and Mason are the most experienced Wildcats in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament as each have played in 14 matches over the last three years. Schultz holds a career 9-4-1 record in the event as he is 4-1 in each of the last two seasons.
Last time out at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, Kansas State finished in eighth place in a competitive 10-team field following a 54-hole score of 54-over par 915. The Wildcats were led by Valociek, who tied for 10th place at 5-over par 221, while Mason also recorded a top-20 finish by tying for 15th place at 7-over par 223.

Lindstrom is playing in his second event of the season after tying for 20th place at 6-over par 222 during the Wildcat Invitational.
Bent will be seeing action for a third time this season as he holds a 73.50 scoring average through six rounds, which includes a 4-over par 220 at the season-opening Southern Dunes Collegiate. Bent also recorded a career-best finish during the Wildcat Invitational when he tied for 17th place at 5-over par 221.
