Nov 19, 2024 | Women's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Playing for Team Spain, Kansas State senior women's golfer Carla Bernat captured medalist honors at The Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship, held this past Thursday through Saturday, at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
This was the 11th edition of The Spirit, which is a competition between 20 countries consisting of teams of two males and two females. The teams play a 54-hole four-ball stroke play competition with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals presented to the top three finishers in each competition. The event was founded in 2011 by Corby Robertson Jr., owner of Whispering Pines, as a celebration of goodwill through the game of golf.
The individual competition is based solely on birdies and eagles with one and two points awarded for each, respectively. Bernat totaled 21 points over the three rounds thanks to 17 birdies and two eagles, the latter of which came on No. 17 in the first round and No. 12 in the final round. After totaling five points on Thursday, Bernat tallied eight points each of the last two rounds to earn a one-point victory.
In the women's team competition, Bernat and her partner, Cayetana Fernandez, finished in second place at 21-under par 195, just two shots behind Denmark. In the men's and women's combined scoring, Team Spain tied for second place at 39-under par, five shots back of England.
Next action for Bernat is the Women's Spanish Open – an event on the Ladies European Tour – November 28 through December 1, at Real Club Guadalhorce Golf in Campanillas, Spain. The K-State women's golf team returns to play February 2-4, at the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
