Wildcats Finish Fifth in Initial Spring Event

Feb 13, 2024 | Men's Golf

MOBILE, Ala. – The Kansas State men's golf team carded a 1-under par 283 final round on Tuesday as the Wildcats finished the Hal Williams Collegiate in fifth place with a 54-hole score of 2-under par 850 at the par-71, 7,178-yard RTJ Magnolia Grove Golf Club.

K-State improved one spot during the final round as the Wildcats completed the final three holes of the second round on Tuesday morning and finished that round with a score of 5-over par 289. However, the Cats rebounded as they were one of just six squads in the 14-team field to go under par in the final 18.

"Overall, it was a solid day today," said head coach Grant Robbins, whose team led the field in par-5 scoring with a 4.47 average, while the Cats had the fourth-most birdies with 49. "I thought the guys all competed really well, but we just had a couple of swings that cost us several shots. There were definitely some positives we can take away from this week. We had contributions from all five players and had moments where we looked really good. We have to get better at maximizing our rounds and not giving shots away. Fortunately, we have a quick turnaround and a great opportunity in front of us next week at The Prestige."

The Wildcats were led at Magnolia Grove by senior Luke O'Neill, who tied for 17th place at 2-under par 211 following an even-par 71 final round. A native of Connemara, Ireland, O'Neill has finished in the top-20 of all four stroke play events this season.

The low round of the day for the Wildcats was put together by junior JP Roller, who turned in a 1-under par 70 thanks to a pair of birdies on Nos. 3 and 10. The Texas Tech transfer, who also shot a 70 in the first round, concluded the tournament in a tie for 31st place at 1-over par 214.

Three Wildcats carded an even-par final round in juniors Nicklaus Mason and Cooper Schultz, as well as sophomore Alex Lindstrom. Mason finished with a 54-hole score of even-par 213 to tie for 26th place. Lindstrom tied for 41st place at 3-over par 216, while Schultz was one shot back and in a tie for 46th place.

Playing as an individual, Ian McCrary finished in 79th place at 15-over par 228 following a final-round score of 3-over par 74.

No. 20 Illinois won the event at 25-under par 827, three shots ahead of 33rd-ranked LSU despite the Tigers having the top two players on the individual leaderboard, including medalist Jay Mendell at 10-under par 203.

The Wildcats return home before quickly heading to the west coast to take part in The Prestige, Monday and Tuesday, at PGA West – the Western Home of Golf in America – in La Quinta, California.
