Nine Wildcats and Men’s 4x400 Relay Medal in Day Two of Big 12 Championship

A total of 14 Wildcats earned medals for top-8 performances

LUBBOCK, Texas – The K-State track and field teams competed on the final day of the Big 12 Championship on Saturday (Feb. 24), marked by nine Wildcats and the men's 4x400 relay earning a spot on the podium at the Sports Performance Center.
 
After 19 scored events, the men's team finished 9th with 34 points, the women's team in 10th place with 33.5 points. Texas Tech led the men with 152 points, Texas taking the women's win with 135 points.
 
Junior Emil Uhlin finished competition in the men's heptathlon, finishing in 5th place with 5,522 points. He recorded his fastest 60 meter hurdles time in 8.35 seconds in 6th place, also finishing 6th in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:42.89. His highest placing of the day in the pole vault clearing 4.73m/15-6.25 in 4th place.
 
The men's 4x400 relay—with seniors Eugene Omalla and Kyle Gale and freshmen Nen Matlock and Tavon Underwood -- finished runner-up with a pre-altitude adjusted time of 3:04.54. With Matlock in place of Jaimie Omalla, the team ran a faster time than posted at the Texas Tech Corky Classic on Jan. 20 at 3:05.72.
 
Eugene Omalla was the only Wildcat to compete in a sprints final race, running in the 400 meter dash where he finished 5th in 45.89 seconds. In the preliminary round on Friday (Feb. 23), he set three new records in the preliminary round in 45.18 seconds.
 
Three Wildcats landed on the men's high jump podium, highlighted by junior Marcus Gelpi taking the third place spot after clearing a height of 2.17m/7-1.50. Senior Devon Richardson and sophomore Aaron Antoine tied for 6th with a height of 2.14m/7-0.25. Sophomore Bryce Collins also competed, placing 11th at a height of 2.06m/6-9.
 
K-State collected two more medals in the women's high jump as sophomore Sharie Enoe captured runner-up after clearing a height of 1.80m/5-10.75. Junior Madelyn McCabe tied for 6th place at a height of 1.72m/5-7.75.
 
Senior Jasmine Greer earned her second medal of the weekend, finishing 7th in the women's shot put with a season best throw of 15.65m/51-4.25. Yesterday she finished 8th in the weight throw.
 
Four more women competed in the shot put placing consecutively-- juniors Grace Thompson (12th; 15.13m/49-7.75) and Daisy Monie (13th; 15.06m/49-5) and seniors Jaycee Schroeder (14th; 14.96m/49-1) and Urte Bacianskaite (15th; 14.76m/48-5.25), who competed in the event for the second time after winning the event during the pentathlon yesterday.
 
Sophomore Jhavor Bennett reached the podium in the men's triple jump in 8th place with a season best distance of 14.90m/48-10.75, just an inch short of his personal best.
 
Two women landed in the top-half of the 3,000 meters, freshman Josphine Wanjiku (12th; 9:35.72), who finished second in her heat, and senior Hannah Stewart (16th; 9:44.10) in a field of 37 finished runners.
 
The Division I top-16 qualifying athletes in each event for the NCAA Indoor Championship will be announced on Tuesday (Feb. 27) in preparation for the meet in Boston, Mass. on March 8-9.
