RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Backed by another under-par round from junior Carla Bernat and an even-par showing by freshman Julia Ballester Barrio, the Kansas State women's golf team climbed two spots on the leaderboard during the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic on Monday at the par-72, 6,305-yard Grand Reserve Golf Club.
Bernat is now in sole possession of first place thanks to a second-round score of 1-under par 71. She enters the final round with a one-shot lead over Furman's Anna Morgan at 6-under par 138. The 58th-ranked Wildcats carded a 4-over par 292 on Monday to move ahead of No. 9 Ole Miss and 50th-ranked Minnesota. K-State enters the final round in ninth place of the loaded 15-team field at 10-over par 585.
"Today started off like yesterday's round ended, but the ladies did well and battled through the front nine," head coach Stew Burke said. "Our back nine today was incredibly impressive, shooting 7-under par on what I believe is the tougher side of the course. Carla played well again in tough conditions and continues to manage her game well. I'm looking forward to the challenge of tomorrow and a strong final round before heading back to Manhattan."
Bernat, a product of Castellon, Spain, is in search of her second victory of the season after winning the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in September. With a win, she can become the first Wildcat with two individual titles in the same season since Connie Jaffrey won two events in the fall of 2017.
Ballester Barrio jumped 16 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 49th place thanks to her even-par round on Monday, which paired four bogeys with four birdies. She enters Tuesday's final round at 5-over par 149, and she is tied with sophomore Noa van Beek, who shaved three strokes off her first-round score and moved 10 spots up the leaderboard by carding a 1-over par 73 in the second round.
One stroke behind them is another freshman, Alenka Navarro, in a tie for 54th place at 6-over par 150 following a second-round score of 4-over par 76. Senior Haley Vargas is tied for 76th place at 11-over par 155.
No. 11 LSU continues to lead the field at 4-over par 572, one stroke ahead of 12th-ranked Texas A&M and three shots clear of No. 38 Oklahoma State.
The final round of the Puerto Rico Classic tees off Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. AST (5:30 a.m. CST) as the Wildcats begin on hole No. 7 and will be paired with Furman and host-school Purdue. Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
